Just another AimTrak Post... Buttons won't respond in MAME
« on: February 07, 2010, 12:27:17 am »
That's right another help me with AimTrak post!

Here's the low down... I've got two AimTraks installed and both track wonderfully. The triggers on both work awesome. The issue I am having is the other buttons. I wired 3 buttons up in addition to the trigger on each gun. The AUX, P1, and P2 on one gun and AUX, P4, and P5 on the second gun. When I try to set the controls in game for the guns nothing happens. The only button that will work is the trigger! I should mention that I have the AUX button on both guns set to "Right-Click" in the AimTrak Configure utility and it will work in Windows.

Is there a setting I need to change in my mame.ini file? Below are my core input options if that will help anyone help me. I am using MAME .122. I also enabled the Joystick because I saw that worked for some one in another thread. Unfortunately it didn't help me at all.

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

Have you updated to the latest firmware?

as suggested make sure your running the current firmware.

the GP stands for gamepad.

for some reason I need to point the gun at the screen in order for the GP's and AUX to pickup so make sure your pointing at the screen when inputting them as that may be the case also.

you may also need to enable gamepad in your main options.

Thanks for the replies all!

I do have the latest firmware going, 1.3. When you update the firmware you need to do it for each AimTrak correct? Not really related to my post, just curious.

I have tried pointing the guns at the screen while pressing the buttons and that didn't help

I have not enabled gamepad in the main mame options. I do have joystick enabled in the core input options. Going to go and see if I can find the gamepad option and enable it now.

We really need to get a FAQ going on the AimTrak. I would be willing to submit my experiences so far.

It's working now!

I had to have joystick = 1 and I had to be pointing the AimTrak at the screen in the tab menu of the game. I must not of had joystick set to 1 while pointing the AimTraks at the screen.

Kind of tough to get just the buttons to register and not the X or Y axis. Of course I could just go into the cfg for the games I want to setup and edit the settings. I do suppose that there is a way to give all the gun games the same configuration. Off to do some research on that.

Thanks for your help everyone. Hopefully somebody with the same issue will stumble across this!

I've found with using guncon's (not aimtrak's, but I'm sure they are the same in MAME) that getting the software to see just one axis is very difficult.  Given enough tries, it is possible to set up a pair of guns inside MAME and just play, but it takes a LONG time, IMO.  I've found the best thing to do is just get a setting in each field that I want setup and then edit the cfg file to get it correct.

Also, I only set up gun games in the default.cfg file.  If you want, I suppose you could do it for each game one at a time, but you will be adding the same config to a series of games for no reason.  If you just have the trigger button as button 1 and then set up your standard button 1 (from the CP) immediately afterward (or before), you will set MAME to respond to one or the other.  Repeat for each gun button and you should be golden!

Thanks for the advice bkenobi. I am going to give that a try later.
