OK, every fiber of my being is just screaming to make fun of this kid. Everything from the weird hallway/room he's in to a comment about scissors/knives to what looks like flies on the ceiling.

But look at this way. He's a kid. He's not a twenty five year old with a job building Trashcade 2.0. He's a kid with limited (or no) funds and limited resources. It's likely his parents probably don't even own any power tools much less any hand tools of any meaningful description.

That poor kid is probably getting a lot of flak over this on YouTube, but yeah he's just a kid. Gotta admire his inspiration. How many kids his age these days do you think even know what an arcade game is? Console and PC gaming has so dominated the whole video game industry here in the U.S. that arcades are all but a fond memory of a distant past. His heart is in the right place, I'll give him that. Maybe in a year or two he'll update the design to incorporate at least a joystick. Playing Mortal Kombat on a keyboard is NO FUN!

Can't imagine I would have done better at his age.

Personally I'd rather just a nice monitor on a nice table with some good arcade sticks if a full cab wasn't possible. This sorta improvisation I think is corny. It's cute, but only cause it's the work of a 14yo kid, otherwise it'd seem despirate.

Maybe it is just because I have kids probably around his age, but I can somewhat admire his creativity.

It isn't like kids his age in this day and age really have the arcade experiences that many of us have. He isn't looking to recreate that feeling from his past. He sees displays in boxes, arcade sticks and a software program equivalent of the keys to the candy store.

He probably doesn't have access to much in the way of tools, and probably doesn't have a parent that is into the pretty large task of embarking on building the real thing.

If it gets him that little bit extra to his gaming experience, then kudos to him.

That being said... He gets an F in use of scissors. That cut out for the display is sloppy as hell.

I sent him a message on You Tube and told him to get his parents to help him with money, tools and woodwork.. Then join the forums here, use the computer that he has and make a basic arcade game. A wooden case, a MiniPAC, buttons and some 8-way sticks...

He's got the creativity, just limited on a kids budget..

Anyway I made some ghetto stuff when I was a kid. Ie. Ghostbusters Proton pack with household items... To me it was awesome but looking back I would think it was aweful compared to the ultra realistic stuff made by the enthusiasts.

I felt the same, after the first video. I compared it to what I could do at that age, but I guess not everyone's both a geek and artistic.

However he redeemed himself with part II. Showed he wasn't just taping up cardboard and satisfied leaving it at that.

Ok so he wrote back and basically (according to him his parents don't want to help. I think the BYOAC team needs to interject. This is the next generation interested in classic arcade games. Very big deal indeed.

I'm going to try and see what kind of computer /arcade stuff I have that I won't ever use. Maybe help him to hack stuff. Find extra arcade buttons..

This kid needs a basic Mame Arcade Cab. I wish I had started building Arcade Cabs when I was his age. By now who knows where I'd be at..

I think the kid is awesome. Back at that age, I was happy with floppy disc games and lego construction. I would have never thought to combine the two in any way.

Before mentoring this kid, perhaps it would be cool to get his parents permission. Without permission, I wouldn't involve myself with this as we don't know what circumstances have him where he is. With permission, we could do several things...

If he is interested in building, we could determine his needs, chip in some money ($5 via Paypal to a veteran BYOAC'r) and purchase and ship his buttons, ipac, joys, etc. and teach him the ropes.

If he just wants to have controls, we could do the same, but also have someone build him a controller box. Although, that would pretty much defeat the purpose as he wouldn't be building or learning...

I agree, anyone criticizing a 14 year old for his unprofessional job of setting up a MAME cab (on no budget) needs a reality check!

I think it's a kid who is getting creative and learning as he goes. That's awesome!

Think of how so many kids his age are spending their free time. He's staying out of trouble, and trying to create something. It's like a class science project with the bonus of being fun.

When I have kids, I will totally encourage them to try to invent things and be creative like that.

Seriously, the best way for a kid to learn is to take a project like this and let him make his own plans, own mistakes, etc. Having a bunch of dudes on the web show up and tell him the 'right' way to do things is a sure-fire way to suck the fun out of it.

Personally, I'm wondering how he got his 'coin slot' working. Mouse hidden inside so that the 'credit card' touches the button?

The project is ambitious for someone who likely has access to every console on the market either at home or a friends place.

The simple fact that he enjoys arcade games coming from a generation that doesn't even know what an arcade meant to people in generations past is a true testament to the fact that some of these games are timeless.

I think that despite the look of the "cabinet" and the aesthetics being amateur-ish in nature, the sheer fact that he took initiative to do something like this should be applauded. He's young, and lets face it, could be doing much worse things at that age. To design and execute something like this is impressive in my opinion.

And considering that 10 years ago some of the cabinets being done by adults in their garage in the infancy of this type of thing didn't look a whole lot better, and cost a small fortune, I think he deserves some kudos.

His cab may suck in our book, but at least wait until he asks for help. For all we know he could be one of those kids who's a little bipolar and his parents don't let him have any scissors for a damn good reason. Of course that doesn't explain why he has a camera, but I digress. His home life may not be what we expect and a bunch of twenty plus aged men offering him money and gaming parts might not put him in the best situation at home.

And for anyone who wants to open private communication with him. Keep in mind, he is a child. Parents get weirded out when their kids are using PM/IM to communicate, it's much worse when Mommy and Daddy discover he's chatting it up with adults. Is he here on the forums yet? This is his best source for communication, ideas and for us to help him where he needs it. Plus it's a public place. If Mommy and Daddy are so inclined, they can read what we discuss about.

A little info:

I posted this video over on KLOV and it took off. Shardian made contact with his father telling him he'd donate some parts for the kids project. It think he had some sticks and buttons he was going to donate. Evidently the post to "pop" spurred his ole' man to pick up the new cab for his kid....

...bravo Shard!

Personally, I find it refreshing to see this kids creativity. Sure, the lines of his original "boxcade" could have used some help, but that credit card credit switch was THE BOMB! This kid is also pretty damn good in front of the camera for his age.

very cool...it is good to see a kid take interest in arcade games. my kids are only 1 and 3, but i really hope that they show an interest like that when they are older. my 3 year old loves to play world class bowling, and my 1 year old loves to pound on the buttons on my DK cabinet...so there is hope.

i have noticed that when our friends come over with their kids, they are often drawn to the cabinets...even though they haven't grown up playing those types of games...it is just awesome to see a kid get into a project like this, and even better to see that his dad is cool enough to support him.

I mean there's nothing wrong with that, i encourage his curiosity but, that cabinet has a CRT inside. If he doesn't take precautions that might be a potential risk. I strongly believe that his father and his uncle are wise enough to supervise his experiments but just in case, somebody warn that kid before he gets into trouble...

I don't know why you guys are all ragging on his cabinet. Is it bad compared to some of the ones on BYOAC? Sure. But this kid is young and he is at least headed in the right direction. I'd encourage him and point him to certain things to help him if anything.

He probably doesn't have access to or the know-how to use powertools and woodworking tools. He probably has no freakin clue at all that you can actually buy real arcade joysticks and buttons to wire up to your PC. And of course he probably doesn't have the allowance money to purchase it all. He's just using what he has available.

I'd say good job to him and I hope he someday hopefully discovers BYOAC and see's the resources on here to help him accomplish his goal.

EDIT: Just saw his new cabinet from craigslist and his freakin soldering video. See? Smart and determined kid. Just needs (needed?) a push in the right direction.

+1 I was surprised to see that he improved it with part II. I'm keeping an eye on this one...

I think if he can do this at this age, when he gets older and gets money, he's probably going to build a kick ass MAME cabinet. He may even build something decent now if he gets an adult involved to help and guide him.

I was going to say that it looks like Renegade ripped the character movements off of Double Dragon....except Renegade was a year earlier, had better looking graphics, and apparently didn't have the slow down that DD had.

Ha, that video is from April, I bet that mixer thingy is already collecting dust in a closet somewhere (unless the cleaning lady is tending to it, that is).

I'd be a lot more impressed if he was plugging a Stratocaster into that amp and writing songs.

As for his first MAME attempt, his heart was in the right place, but I guess I would have assumed that by the age of 13 (or whatever) most people would be able to rock a utility knife and straight edge...?

Come on guys, this kid did more than most of us when we were that age. In fact, at his age I was praying to win a Street Fighter II TE cab from Nintendo Power. Didn't win it of course, but fulfilled that childhood dream later. If I had what this kid has back then, my head would have exploded with excitement.

Now, I'm sure we can offer him some tutelage to bring him along...
