I received a call from a guy today.  He and I actually spoke about five months ago, when I was still working for the amusement company I used to work for.

He came into possession of eleven games.  For FREE.  The ironic part is where he got them from.  About three years ago I was trying to track down old warehouses.  There was one guy I called but thought I never heard from him.  Turned out he returned my call right away, but my wife deleted his message and forgot to tell me about it for a few months!  By the time she remembered I figured this guy would be ticked that I didn't return his call, so I didn't try contacting him again.

Well...this guy is where he got the games.

* Peale kicks himself

So this guys wife works with my wife, and they get talking (as women do) and Sarah drops our number to him.

I went over about noon today.

Defender.  Burger Time.  Capcom Bowl (in a Pac-Man cab).  Galaxian.  Donkey Kong.  Donkey Kong 3.  Lethal Enforcers.  Shinobi (Pac Man cab). Tunnel Hunt.  Outrun.  Popeye.  Pac Man cocktail.  Centipede cabaret.

All have been stored in a barn for quite a while (filthy, rats nests, etc).  I think only ONE work (so I was told, going back tonight to check more in depth).

Not sure what I'm going to do yet.  May barter for the Defender and shop space.  *shrug*

You didn't mention the reason the guy called you... he has 11 games, they don't work... but is he selling them, looking for a tech, what?

Let me know if there's anything I can do if he's looking to make a deal you're not immediately prepared to handle.  I could deal with a road trip.   :)

He's looking to set up a gameroom.

Burgertime had no board.

Most have monitor issues.

Defender works - I think (monitor issues I can't adjust out) but no sound.

Centipede had a resistor on the AR2 power board burst into glowy poof-ness.

Meh, in this instance not doing it for the income.  It does provide a suitable distraction to the things going on in Real Life.

But you'd still get a Defender out of the deal, yes?

I would love to have a dedicated Burgertime. It's definitely one of my favorite cabinets out there.

Decided to get my feet wet with Donkey Kong 3.

First off...these machines were all stored in a barn, so there's lots of corrosion everywhere.

And have I mentioned how much I HATE working on Sanyo EZ monitors?  EZ ---my bottom---!

Trying to take the shield off the flyback area.  One...two...three screws come off easy.  The fourth?  Not so much.  Figure I'll just bend the whole thing out of the way...um...what was that cracking sound?  CRAP!  I broke the PCB in  two.   :hissy:  Now my recap job is going to take five times as long.

No wonder you left that amusement company (or did they kick you out).....not enough patience for this work  :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2:
 ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

Seriously, we all have these kind of things happening to us.......that't the risk of being in this hobby.......

I went nuts when all of a sudden one of the RAMS and ROMS showed to be defective on my SW.......thought I had messed too much with the PCBs........turned out that there was just one RAM that had failed, but I expect you get the same feeling of shock and anger about you own stupidity at that moment......

Since I've been sick I haven't been putting in hours working on this stuff like I want to.  So tonight I've been feeling pretty good, I'm heading to the shop.

Pull out a Shinobi (conversion in a Pac-Man cab).  No power supply.  I've brought a brand new one from home.  Hm...nothing but garbage on screen.  Voltages okay.  But I've verified that I've got a good monitor.  K4600.  Pull it.

Pull out the Defender.  Pull out the poorly working K4600 and pop in the one from the Shinobi.  Boots!  Right up!  No sound.  Weird.  I play a little bit.

Hit the test button on the sound board, start getting sounds.  Reading the instruction manual it states some stuff I should check, but I honestly don't know what it's telling me.

Then I go to the front of the machine...garbage on screen!  WTF?!?!?  Then the smell hits me...magic blue smoke.

I turn it off.  Start touching stuff.  RAM chips are hot.   Guessing I've got at least a couple blown ones.

Turn it off, reseat a lot of things, turn it on...this time, blanks screen.  But now one of the RAM chips begins to smoke!  Crap!  By this time it's midnight, I'm tired, and getting nowhere fast.  I pack it in.

Any troubleshooting advice on the Defender?

I have heard..... it's VERY sensitive regarding voltage. It's very common to fry RAM chips. And that's all I can say. Sorry.
NO MORE!!

I haven't worked on this stuff in a while, but here's a mini update, and an opportunity for the fine folk @ BYOAC.

I worked on the Outrun.  Cleaned it up, and popped in a capped K4600.  Works like a charm.  They were thrilled to be able to play it.

The monitor from the Outrun is a Hantarex MTC-900.  I still haven't been able to get it working.  Powers up, but comes up with a light yellow screen.  Nothing else.  *shrug*.

Fixed the traces on the EZ I cracked the board on.  At least I think I did.  I still need to cap and test it.

And here's the end: the garage that these games are located in is closing.  So they need to vacate them.

I'm claiming the Defender and the Centipede mini, possibly the Donkey Kong and Galaxian.  The Lethal Enforcers and Outrun are going home with the owner of the garage.   The rest need to go by the end of the month.

I'll post more when I have more details.
