I believe some like to have their minds entertained, and some like to have their senses entertained (and some like their senses entertained but only within a specific ruleset (such as not too many leaps in logic). The reason why a movie like 2012 is so successful is because there are a lot of people who want exactly that: to have their senses entertain and to escape from reality for a couple of hours, logic be damned.
Naturally, the best form of escapism is a movie that manages to do both, but someone enjoying a movie like 2012 doesn't mean they have bad taste, or that they are stupid (not that anyone is implying this), or whatever else, it just means they like to see crap blow up. If it's entertaining to them, so be it.
My take: haven't seen it yet but it's a type of movie that will surely look and sound great on a good home theatre, which I have so yeah; I'm looking forward to seeing "---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- get blown up". I do have my limits at times (depending on my mood I guess) so we'll see how it goes.
