Left-Overs Project: Galaga Bar-Top (in planning)
« on: June 22, 2004, 05:54:46 pm »
Seeing as I always seem to have piles of odd junk lying around my apartment, I thought I might as well put it to good use and put together a little bar-top machine.

I took Jakobud's fantastic plans for the full size Galaga upright, scaled the side down 75% and then cut the arse off it.
I'm going to use 1/2" mdf and T-Molding that I found at McMasterCarr for 21c per foot (part number 93165K1). I should just about be able to squeeze an ancient 17" PC monitor in there along with a very dusty looking Cyrix 6x86 based computer running ArcadeOS and VAntAGE from a 32mb compact flash card.

For some reason I began with the side-art (I have no idea why, I've never even used sideart on a project before). I took PatrickL's beautifully vectorized Galaga sideart and bastardized it. It still needs some cleaning, but looks like it should fit nicely. I'm trying to keep this as small as possible, so I might see if I can incorporate the marquee into the bezel somhow, or leave it out completely.

I'll spend a lot of time planning this all out, so hopefully I won't run into too much trouble when building time arrives.

Here's the beginnings....

I'm not.  You better be done by the 14th, or I'm going to blackmail the rest of the guys into getting socks with bars of soap, and beating you with them for ten minutes.  You will then have fifteen minutes to work on the cabinet.  If you are not done, beatings will commence.

This will repeat until you are done.

I tried to come up with something clever to say about the Shorties Watchin Shorties "Irish soap" animation, but I came up empty handed and I appologize for that.  :'(

BTW, I love the idea.  Guess I can't call mine "Mini-Galaga" anymore though...  It'll have to be called "Midi-Galaga" I guess.  :-\
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

That is so funny, I just drew up some plans for a mini galaga bartop also!  I too have the computer and monitor ready, and the controls also (just going to make it a 1p panel).  I can't wait to get started on it.

Can't wait to see more of yours too!
first off your and idiot

Man I love the internet, haha.

Oops. For some reason I thought yours was Mini Ms.PacMan, sorry for stealing the name. Maybe I'll call mine Micro-Galaga? Or just Galaga Bar-Top?

Here's a control panel WIP, I'll probably use a piece of .063 aluminum for it...

If it looks as good done as it does now--you have earned the right to call it just "galaga" as it looks like something that could very easily be found in an arcade. ;D
its better to not post and be thought a fool, then to whip out your keyboard and remove all doubt...

I used the PatrickL's version of the sideart, which you can download here:

I haven't had a chance to go near this project lately, I've been running around trying to find a new car so there's been no progress since I last posted.  :(
