Sanwa 29PFX-A power cable wiring help
« on: February 02, 2010, 06:59:41 pm »
Hey guys, as the title states, I need a little help with building a power cable for my Sanwa 29PFX-A arcade monitor. First of all please don't refer me to the other threads regarding this monitor because they don't answer the question I have. I'm fully capable of building my own power cable once I know the wiring scheme. My question is this: since there are 3 wires going to the power connector (white, grey, and green), which one is the hot wire, white or grey, and which is the neutral wire? I know (or reasonably assume) the green is ground, so I just need to differentiate between the white and grey wires. Obviously I don't want to figure this out by trial and error because if I get those wires backwards and plug it in I'm fairly sure it will destroy my monitor. If anyone knows the answer to this I would greatly appreciate the help.

Maybe I'm wrong in thinking about how it's wired? Are both the white and grey wires connected to the hot wire of a traditional 110V outlet?

i would look at the other side of that connector and see where the wire goes.

first place the hot wire's going to go is a fuse.

first place a ground is going to go would be someplace on metal of the chassis

neutral is going to be probably right next to the hot wire.

your other wires may be for a switch for the degauss circuit.

if this is following the european style of wire coding (thinking this because it has no black for the us style of coding)

blue - neutral
brown - live
green - ground

but white and gray no idea...but most likely the switch for degauss.

i would not take my advise 100% though...

Yeah the blue and brown are for the degauss switch, I already know that. The green is ground because I can see where it connects to ground point on the circuit board. My issue is strictly with the white and grey wires. I know one is hot and one (provided this is a standard wiring circuit) is neutral. I just don't know which is which. If this helps, both the white and grey wires connect to the same connector on the monitor circuit board, each to a separate pin. There's no marking on the wires or circuit board whatsoever that distinguishes anything. This is very frustrating because information on these monitors is damn near nonexistant. Like I said I don't want to just take a chance and wire it how I think it should be because there's a 50/50 chance I'll get the wires backwards and kill my monitor.

if it's between the white and gray, i would still follow the circuit board... your hot will go to a fuse first. the neutral will not. (or shouldn't)

If you do get them backwards, it won't blow anything up.  It just ever so slightly compromises the fusing on the input.  I don't have one of my 29PFX's available right now to check, but I can look the next time I'm near one if you still haven't figured it out by then.

FYI, if you're in Europe, be sure the degauss coil is hooked up to the 220-240V connection, not the 120V.  I would suspect that if you have it hooked up to the 120V connection, you'll fry your degauss coil.  Everything else on the monitor is free-range, and you don't have to worry about input voltage.

I'm in the USA, not in Europe, so I'm connecting the monitor to a standard 110V outlet. I'm not worried about a degauss switch at the moment, but maybe later. I know you made a power cable for another member here with the same monitor, and I found the picture in the other post:

Judging from that picture, as long as you followed standard US wiring code, the white wire should be neutral, the black wire should be hot, and the green wire of course is ground. Maybe you remember from looking at that picture. If you can check yourself to make sure I would really appreciate a final judgment on this. I'm itching to get a power cable and attach it to the monitor, just want to make sure I do it right. Thanks for your help!

To be honest, I'm pretty sure that was before I bought my 29PFXs.  I just matched the white wire up with the white wire :)  Like I said, it's not a huge deal if you get it backwards.

Got a multimeter?  Find the line fuse on the chassis board and check for continuity between it and the white/gray wires.  Whichever one you get continuity on is the "hot".
