I have been reading this forum for months now working out a design for an arcade cab then got side tracked on building a pinball cab.

Size was built around a widebody lockdown bar and a 42" Sharp Aquos .

Few pics of whats been done so far

LCD test mount, the back is still to be raised another 2"

I bought a 32" Sharp Aquos for the backbox but my partner ended up stealing it for our bedroom so i need to source another. DMD is a 19" 4:3 LG LCD

Yeah the draw is for the PC to mount to also makes it easy to remove out of the cab.

Started working on a 3d model to help with the backbox design, thought id post it at its current state to help people with the overall cab dimensions. Keep in mind all material is 16mm MDF

Appreciate the post of the model, but unfortunately none of the dimensions are readable, since the forum shrinks embedded images...

You might try attaching the file instead of linking to it, since attachments can have a higher resolution.

I extracted the photobucket URL and looked at it that way, but other, less computer savvy visitors may not figure out that workaround.

The drawer is for the pc parts to be mounted to allowing easy acces and removal.

The 19" LCD is pushed up against the DMD hole and sinks bellow the backglass into the main cab. I made a wood block that mounts to the LCD that also stops it from falling bellow the reces.

Started painting some of the panels today and its safe to say never again will i try and attempt piano black its just to hard with a pressue pack can and it was windy as hell with no escaping it.

gloss black

Clear coat is still to go on then ill wait a week for it all to go hard before i start to polish it.

Sweet paint job, Kurt! Very clean. How many coats are on that piece?

BTW, what kind of router edge did you do to the DMD and speaker holes? I'm ready to do mine, but I'm scared to start since there's no undo button in real life! hehe. I was thinking of a rounding bit, but a couple of tests I did the 45deg chamfer looked pretty clean.

Threw in a shelf to hold the 32" display before i pull it apart to glue and fill then it should be ready for priming tonight with any luck..

Quick picture to make sure it all fits. I havent added any mount yet so the monitor will sit straight once i have them and glass in.

It doesnt look super sweet at the moment it's covered in polly filler.

I built the box to fit around the tv so i ddnt have to de-case it more protective that way i guessed.

Got alittle bored while waiting for the backbox to dry so i started the backplate and glass retainer.

Getting a pretty good reflection considering its covered in dust and still needs a 1200 sanding and polish.

Hopefully have the backbox 80% completed this arvo just waiting on fans and grills to turn up and throw some glass in there.

Received my 120mm Fans with red LED's and grills today so i can finish up the backbox and move onto spraying the main cab.. I can slowly see the finish line then onto wiring it all up my least favourite job..

Amazing. The quality and ingenuity of the people on this forum is awesome. I've seen some other pinball cabs that looked ok, but they didn't go the full distance to making it look 100% like a real pinball machine. I mean with the legs and the coin door. It's gonna be sweeeeeeet.

I have tried to put some attention into the cab design from working with pictures as i havent seen or used a real pinball in 10-15 yrs.

Tables that i have tested look pretty good and the ball speed and movements feel as good as they would get with a virtual setup.

Very nice! I think a V.Pinball cab like this is where a glossy black really shines (pardon the pun)...really compliments the look imo. I think any guy space in the basement needs one of these to really be "complete"...without one you will just be left wanting... /sigh

paints come up ok i think real sunlight doesnt show off your painting skills all that much but inside under lights it looks nice.
Rest of the cabs sides and back will have black vinyl for now until i get my artwork sorted out.

I wish i had a basement id be lucky to get a corner of a room at my joint.

Small update, I added some extra admin buttons and drilled two holes in the base for the fans.

Primed sanded and primed some more then worked on the black that should reflect the playfield nicely.

Still waiting on Glass and Vinyl and a few buttons to finish the cab and backglass.

Are you using the black ones for the Stern legs? Mine would just BARELY make it into the back plate, and I couldn't even get half of the nuts on them. When I added the padded protectors, it just got worse.

Had a good start to the day after managing to thread two leg bolts and dropping the backbox door on the floor i decided to take the dogs down to the beach and then start again.

I love this cab man. This looks all set to be one of the best examples of virtual pinball cabs I've seen. You know you're going to be the envy of all your mates when this gets up and running. How many want one already?

Kizer: Its automotive putty used on cars along with the primer gives a very smooth surface just need to sand in between coats. Paint i used was black gloss enamel 3-4 coats depending on area i was painting along with wet sanding between coats followed by 2 coats of enamel clear coat for that extra shine.

After getting smashed by the storm last night i got a day off work as we had no power so i decided to take a chance at painting the lockdown bar to suit the rest of the cab.

cleaned, Primed twice and sanded in between then spray putty 2 coats with light sanding in between and 2 coats so far of black still needs a wet sand and an extra coat.

Just ordered the rest of the bits and pieces I have been meaning to for the last few weeks so i can start wiring it all up over the Easter break.

Also ordered 2 industrial relays to help the flippers feel more real.. expensive little things $230 to get them to my door damn customs.

crashwg: They are magnetic impact relays so when the flippers are pressed it will add that thump on the sidewall of the cab like a real machine in a sence. That along side a sub woofer it should sound and feel pretty good.

Seems you paid a fair bit for those relays though, I was just wondering if there weren't cheaper solenoids that would do the job? I'm sure you researched it though by the looks of things.

Thanks Ond, Regarding the relays i didnt do enough research and paid for it but they are tried and tested.

Cheap option someone pointed out is http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/onl...um=cpc#details Guys are testing it out atm.

But, wouldn't just picking up a few used pinball solenoids off ebay for 4$ work just as well? Or are they too difficult to wire up or something? I could see mounting them so they smack the inside of the cab right next to the flipper button (might have to play with the arrangement to get the feel right).

Thanks drventure, I really have no clue when it comes to the inner workings on a real pinball machine i think when its comes down to wiring it to the i-pac it should be easy enough with the relay and leaf switch in mind. It's all trial and error on my end so ill have to wait and see if it works out.

Pic of the relays, i just need to order a 12v DC PSU to run them both.

Finally after all this time i have been able to drill the flipper button holes very nervous cuts as if i stuffed it up there would be no going back.

I have a question that's probably been asked a bajillion times. Is it ok to keep the lcd on it's back like that? I ask because when I purchased mine the employee pretty much told me to treat it like it's a fabriche egg.

lcd's are pretty rugged no problem laying them down or with the vibrations.

Plasmas are the ones you can't lay down or it will bleed out.

Another great pinball build! Fantastic work Kurt! I've just recently decided to build a virtual pinball and I'm looking to gather as much information from as many threads as possible. Yours will definitely be a resource!

Regarding the side art..there are a few things that I'm not a fan of and thought you'd want the additional input...

1) Have you ever looked at something one way and then always see it that way? (A little like the old 'is it a rabbit or a duck?' picture). To me, the pinball with cape and hair looks like a hole with a cape hanging out.

2) The people are pointing up, but 'Superpin' is to their right

3) How's that logo gonna look on the other side? Imagine the big 'S' closer to the flipper buttons, leading to the narrower 'n' toward the thicker back part of the cabinet.

4) I don't see the need for the additional 'Superpin' on the top.

Again, kudos on all your hard work that is obviously paying off!

wow didn't realize that.

plasma's are much heavier and use more power too (i guess also get hotter?)

shame really as plasma gives really great colour pop

Were you going to mount mercury switches to handle tilt and nudge, or did I see that on a different thread.

I picked up 3 of em for my cab, just trying to figure out exactly how I should mount them now....

I love those chrome flipper buttons, btw!

Projects taken a back seat as i haven't had the time to spend on it, shes still standing but covered in dust hopefully when the weather picks up ill finish her off.

Sadly no progress has been made as when the weather turned bleak so did the motivation, Hope to finish this off this summer when life slows down alittle.

maybe your motivation comes back when you know you have a big fanbase. ppl like me just lurking around not saying anything in your thread but looking with envious eyes, and slowly and surely they drew their plans against us... err no sorry that was War of the worlds
