Mounting a 21" pc monitor in a Mortal Kombat cab
« on: January 31, 2010, 03:39:56 am »
So I've decided that I'm going to replace my current monitor in my cab with a Sony P1130 pc monitor.

You can see it here:

I plan on decasing it and mounting it in plywood as like this:

I will saw a piece of plywood in the shape of the original mounting brackets for the 25"  monitor and then saw a hole in the middle of the board for the 21" monitor and mount it in it.

A few questions though.

1.  Should I mount to the over or understide of the plywood to get the correct mounting height?  I am using a flat panel display.

2.  Should I use 1/2" or 3/4" plywood?

3.  If I paint the plywood black and mount to the bottom of the plywood do you think it will look good?

I'm open to using something other than plywood if someone has a better suggestion.

I've seen some people do this on the forum before, but I can't remember the projects involved.  A link to some examples would be very helpful.

I'm not sure having the monitor mount right on the very edge of the plywood is going to get you much stability.  Seems like it would just crack right out under stress.

I'm working on mounting a 19" right now the same way but am trying to work out something with angle iron or similar to spread the mount point across several bolts.

Poking around the forum revealed this to me:

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=73101.0

Namco said that his felt very stable and strong.

However, I do think I will try to add a little bit more to prevent the wood from cracking.  If I could find some very strong metal coupling bars that would allow me to move the holes out a couple of inches that would probably do the trick.

something sort of like these, but bigger and stronger:

one of these above and below the wood should distribute the load some and move it away from the edge.

I'm picking up this exact monitor to have on hand for any future projects. $20 off CL  :applaud:

I decased a 22" Dell last year for my cocktail project, and it is being held on solely by the four corners (no back support).  There's been no tear out, sag, etc.

Since a picture is worth a thousand words (if you are interested), pop over here, and head down not quite 1/2 way to img_4088 and click it.
