Help with ideas to mount TV into my cab.
« on: January 27, 2010, 01:26:34 pm »
Here are some early ideas for the cabinet, anyone have suggestions on how to structurally mount the TV.  Rotating is pretty important to me, and im not sure how to do this properly.  If I keep it horizontal, it seems high.  And I only have it attached to a sheet of 3/4" MDF, with that small section of 3x6" of support under.  I know nothing about integrity, so I dont know how to safely have the TV there.

Would it be better to change the MDF to a pair of 2x4's somehow? Maybe mount them from the inside attached to the base?

TV and mount is probably 32" or 37" at 40-45lbs, but lets say 55lbs to be safe.

Another thing, would it be possible to stick a metal pole in the middle of the cab?  And just mount the tv with one of those pole mounts?

A metal pole would work as long as it was mounted firmly on the ground.  You could make a long rectangular box with 2x4's in the middle surrounded by sheets of MDF! This would look similar to your design and should be strong enough but you would need to spread the weight between each 2x4. But if it was me I would use a 4x4 timber post which would be cheaper and easier than a metal one. (see Ond's crazy cab http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=88912.0)

Edit: Forgot to say, I really like the design!

Thank you for the point in Ond's cab, I think im going to use the 4x4.  His is great, because I wanted it to be angled a bit and he has that down.  The plan is to make two of these side by side for some fighting game action, but be expandable for a bigger/smaller tv, and certain add-on's like the 1" space on the CP to add a steering wheel.

I just have no idea about how structural and sturdy anything should be.  The bottom base is 30" long, and the CP is 36" long.  I shouldnt have to worry about this thing rocking right?

No! Something that wide definitely won't rock about! They are pretty heavy when complete and even if its built wonkey, you can always put a beer mat under one corner  ;D

You could always just mount the screen to the wall. then you could put the base closer or further away from it depending on the screen. be kinda cool if it was on wheels and you could just wheel it out of the way into a closet or off to the side.

the strongest rotating mech i know is done on german universal metal cabinet called fashion vision. it handles 30-40 kg of tube and mounting box without any prob, but i guess it could tate 100 kg or even more . i will mod one of them with a 32 oder 37 inch lcd this summer .

for smaller lcd sets i would consider using something from this site here :
