Akinator - Try to stump the genie
« on: January 27, 2010, 11:10:45 am »
Think of a character from movies, tv, books, video games, etc (or a real person) and see if you can stump the genie. (Might be old, but I just found out about it and I'm addicted)

There is also an iPhone app available.

Good find.  I tried the following:

Pug/Milamber from Raymond Feist's novels
Twiki - Buck Rogers
Bobby Knight

It eventually guessed them all.  Pug and Bobby Knight both had other guesses first before it narrowed it down enough.

I've stumped it quite a few times, but some of the ones it gets just amazes me.

It's not too hard to stump it with obscure characters, but the amount of characters it does get is amazing.

I agree about the amount of characters.  It'd be different and probably easier if it were just video game characters, sports figures or ____________, but to have everything rolled together is impressive.

Just make sure to update it with the characters you stump it with, so it can learn and improve. I've added a LOT. Also, you can add questions once it finds yours (but I can't figure out how to do it for the ones it doesn't find).

Tried it. The last one it said based on my answers was Joe Camel.

Holy ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---.  It got Kilgore Trout on the first try even though I had answered I don't know or probably partially to like half the questions, e.g., is he still working, does he smoke, does he use guns.  Amazing.

And sometimes it just seems downright creepy.  Here's the line of questions for guessing Bruce Campbell:

Is your character a real person?  yes
Is your character a female?  no
Is your character an actor?  yes
Does your character play in primarily comedic roles?  probably partially
Does your character fight demons?  yes  (hmm . . . that's a kind of strange question to get so quickly)
Does your character interface with machinery?  yes  (okay . . . WTF?)
Has your character played in horror movies?   yes
blah
blah
Bruce Campbell

But how did it know so fast?  Why not immediately think of Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell, Jim Carey, Owen Wilson, Bill Murray, Chris Farley, Vince Vaughan, Steve Martin . . . I mean seriously dozens upon dozens of actors would seem to suggest themselves before Bruce Campbell after those first four questions, but that 5th question was definitely fishing for Bruce Campbell and then the 6th question, come on.  Amazing.

Keep in mind it will find the ones that people play a lot pretty quick, creepy as it may be. It took it no time to find the Black Knight from Holy Grail. It amazed me was how quick it found Bob from What About Bob and Marv from Home Alone.

Even though it's nice to stump it with obscure ones, I find it fascinating sometimes to play more popular ones and see how quick it gets it based on almost nothing.

Check the details once he gets it right. It will tell you how many times that one has been played, and shows the logic of what answers it expected to get there.

Sometimes the logic is iffy, depending on whoever entered it or maybe common answers. Pennywise from "It," for instance, it expected "Yes" on "Is an adult male," "Is a human being," and "Is male," when anyone who knows anything about it (not him) knows its true form. Now, I can see how if only going on the description of appearance, you can say it appears to be an adult male, but "Is your character an adult male?" is hard to say yes to when you know what's what.

I stumped it with Kano from Mortal Kombat. After I picked Kano from the list, it let me examine what the expected answers were. There were more than a few wrong ones, specifically the mask. Kano has a partial face plate, or mask. I picked 'partial' as my answer twice. It expected 'no' for Kano.

It's probably going to ask if Saint's gameroom is ever going to be done and if he's going to update his teaser thread.

I have ran a game of "Chad Tower" a few times now to build up a profile. Feel free to join in everyone! Once his profile is to the point we can pin him down, you can start adding questions and add a pic.  ;D

Once you exhaust your questions, just type his name in and pic his entries from the list to add to the profile. I'm trying to be honest, but in reality I should be answering "Yes" to everything not physical, right?  ;)

?

Anyways, Chad hurt his eye and hasn't been on the computer in a while on doctors orders. He's back online, but is going through his usual New Years withdrawal attempt. He'll be back soon enough.

FYI, I got him AND added the following question:

Can your character properly load MDF into a pick-up truck?

Okay okay. He got so pissed over the Burger King 'disingenuous' Christmas card I sent him, that he slammed it down on the table and hit a fork, which flew up and poked him in the eye.

Okay so I don't really know what he did, but he did say it was a bit embarrassing and wasn't sharing publicly. The part about the card and him being a bit upset is true though. How the frick was I supposed to know that "Disingenuous" is a major insult up in New England?? Hell, I've never even heard the word in conversation in hillbilly central. It was a silly card with a buck in it... I would have gotten a kick out of getting one no matter what it said!

Tried "Hawkeye" Pierce from M*A*S*H - after 18 questions it came up with Dr. Kelso from Scrubs. After about 20 characters thats the first I've been able to stump it and it wasn't really that far off...

It seems to be really good at video game characters.

It got Cormano from Sunset riders in 20 questions. I was amazed.

That thing is freakin' awesome!

Got Subotai from Conan 1st go, but I stumped it with Charles de Mar from "Better off dead..." Genie's guess was Cameron from Ferris Buellers Day Off which is close. I think this site is going to waste a lot of my time.
