I've got an extra, extra 360 that will never see XBOX LIVE. It was running great, but is currently stuck in the "Cant update your system" loop on boot rendering the console useless. I've run 15 games spanning 4 years of updates (this console has NXE on it) with no luck of finding the right disc to update it.

So I was curious: since the factory OS is seeming to be borked, is there any modding (mod chip or otherwise) that I could do to bypass the updates or forgo the factory OS entirely?

I honestly have no intention of running burnt games, but playing emulators/CoD map mods/homebrew is an attractive prospect.

Plus I have the case all painted up like Eddie Van Halen's Frankenstrat.

Just for the record, it has no seal and the case and hardware serials don't match. I bought it as an untested mobo/dvd drive with no case and found that I had a working console for $15.  :applaud:

Existing modchips for the 360 are actually just making the 360's drive give false positives on media detection so that DVDRs look ligit.  It offers no other features.

For homebrew and much MORE options there's the recent JTAG exploit which you can look up but you'll find that MUCH more involved.  However it uses an exploit in a specific version of the firmware, I'm pretty certian it still needs to be operational for it to work.

Oh. That sucks. And from I've been reading my console is pretty well screwed. Oh well. It was only $15 for the guts and $15 for the case (which I will definitely be holding onto.)
If anybody has any other ideas feel free to chime in.

The torrent doesn't contain the update I need, but at least after reading that post I know what I need to do.

I need 2.0.8507. According to bethesda softworks (in searching for that kernel they came up) I SHOULD be able to pop in any game made after August of 09 and have it update. I put in MW2, but that didnt work. I wonder if perhaps my DVD drive is going bad.

EDIT: Well Ill be damned. MW2 didnt do it, but Left for Dead 2 brought my 360 back to life. Ironic...
