TV lost red colors
« on: January 18, 2010, 04:37:58 pm »
Hi there,

This isn't strictly arcade related, but my old, trusty 28" CRT TV (PAL) just lost all red colors. It's a 12-year old Prosonic (really cheap European brand, but their old CRTs were actually quite good).

I tried all forms of inputs available (pure antenna signal, Xbox, sat receiver etc.) and the problem remains.

Anyway, I thought that maybe some of the gurus in here could think of a few quick fix solution attempts before I ditch my TV :)   Like: where should I look for shorts or poor connections, which corroded plugs could cause the problem etc... I am open to replacing simple components, but ICs and the like are probably beyond my skills.

Any help is much appreciated, although my hopes aren't that high, hehe...

Open it up and take a good look around the neckboard attached to the tube.
Not a technician . . . . just a DIY'er.

Could be a few things...bad neckboard transistor, back tube, bad video IC...I'd start simple and work your way to complicated.

So when the R, G or B transistors are mentioned (in similar threads), this references three transistors on the neckboard (attached to the tube)?

If they are clearly labeled I will try swapping them around and see how the colors respond. Such an operation should be performed with the neckboard removed, right? As I recall (I haven't opened the TV yet) it should be possible to pull out the neckboard from the pins/socket at the narrow end of the tube...

Will it be necessary to discharge the tube? I have done that before, but won't bother/risk it if it isn't necessary  :P

Thanks for the help!
