When to prime?

Working with MDF and will be priming it with oil-based primer/sealer but I was wondering if I should do this to each piece BEFORE assembling the parts (gluing them - will the primer interfere with adhesion) or if it is recommended to assemble it and then prime/seal?

if you are planning on doing any detail work of different colours...it'd probably be best to do that before assembly...

otherwise it'll save you a lot of time to do it after assembly...

Nope - no fancy schmancy painting - just the basic semi-gloss black with some semi-gloss gold on the edges.

BTW - that Avatar of yours is wild.

You might want to re-think painting the edges, and go with a gold t-molding instead.

Well, it's for a portable arcade unit I'm building and in order to minimize weight I'm using 1/2" mdf.  I haven't seen 1/2" wide T-molding, and I don't really think there is enough edge showing to warrant it even if I could find it.

Well, I had already designed, cut, and sanded the cab parts as if I wasn't going to use T-Molding (since I didn't know that 1/2" was available), so I guess it's moot now.  I'll keep it in mind for possible future cabs, though.

Just be careful with your cab, then.  MDF isn't very solid when it comes to the edges (easy to chip, or smash).

Glueing always before priming!
And just 1 prime layer. Final layers are the ones to do more than 1 time.
