I have Adobe Illustrator 8.0 ...... but it seems I can never open any of these .ai files from any of these vector file sites.

Now I am definitely not AI swavvy so bear with me, but can anyone suggest why this may be ?

I was having trouble with a couple files earlier and then I saw this post pointing to the same site I got files from earlier and figured I'd try this particular .ai file that was being asked for..... same results.

But I can open them all with Adobe Reader just fine.  ???

The guy I gave it to could not import it into Corel properly (that was what he was going to print it from to get the scale) He converted it with Illustrator and it ended up missing layers.

He said I should try get it resaved as an earlier version so he can try and import again. I recon if I can get it saved as a massive JPG or PNG then he can print it as photo quality rather than vector.

I open those files in Adobe Photoshop 7 with no problem at all, they are vector and you can pick the size you want them to be.  I dont think they open at full size when you use acrobat.

You are right, thanks, you just select the pixles per inch and open with photoshop, then you can save as JPG and give to printer dude.

With Acrobat, it opens as a vector because you can zoom, zoom into it forever. (at least 6400% with reader 7)

I saved this in AI 8 format. Just unzip and go.

Yup, that one opened up great for me with AI 8 ....
Just sucks every time I go to a vector file site nothing will open for me with AI 8.
I downloaded one of the newer AI trial programs (CS3 or CS4) and everything opens fine with it from the sites.
Guess I'll need to upgrade in order to keep up. Was planning on trying to learn some of this, but kinda hard if files aren't very well backward compatible and such.

The Sticker guy in Maroochydore could not even import it properly when I put it in Photoshop CS format. Fortunatly I also had it in a very large JPG format version too.

Here is the the final image I got printed.

The bit where I have writen by Matthew Painter refers to my cabinet, not the image.

Thanks to everyone for helping me. Here is a link to my build thread, Arcade10 I got two stickers printed on 30cm round vinyl and will shortly post a picture of the art stuck to the side of my cab.

Cheers
