Sony kp-51ws510 flashes, gets fuzzy, flashes, sharp again
« on: December 30, 2009, 02:35:27 pm »
This was one of the first CRT HDTVs that was released, as I recall.  I use it to play games with an s-video connection.

Anyway, I fear the tubes may be failing because of what I described in the subject.  The picture will flash and suddenly be noticeably fuzzy.  It's not unwatchable or anything, but it's pretty bad.  After awhile, the picture will flash again and it will be back to normal.

Another problem I've had intermittently with it is in the convergence.  Sometimes when I try to adjust it, there will be a red cross and a green cross, but no blue cross.  The TV displays blue perfectly fine, but for whatever reason, it just doesn't want to have blue showing when I'm adjusting the convergence sometimes.  So instead of having a bunch of white crosses I end up with a bunch of yellow crosses and can only adjust the red.

Any quick fixes or is this just a case of a projection TV showing its age?  Thanks.

if this is a crt rptv then i would look towards the blue gun shorting out or a bad connection on the ht lead to the flyback

could be a fault in a crt . note : these projo's have 3 crts  r/b/g

a single color fault would be indicative of that same color crt.

another area would be the HV distribution block  and focus block.

coolant leakage ( ethylene glycol )  can also be an issue .  PCB damage/shorts etc....

the convergence should NOT require frequent adjustment.

This is a common problem on a model monitor I own (fortunately, none of mine seem affected).  It's apparently a CRT fault brought on by a bum flyback with bad focus output(s).  In this case, many report it is temperature/humidity related, usually getting worse in the winter and "fixing itself" temporarily once the tube is plenty warm (fault returns upon subsequent cold power up).

Normal fix is to both replace the flyback (may be focus distribution fault on a projection set) and often clearing the resulting short in the CRT.
