Restore, Mame, or Jamma?
« on: December 30, 2009, 07:42:17 am »
Ok I have been lucky enough to get 4 cabs for delivery charge only. So my question is which would you restore, which would you MAMEify and which would you make a jamma cab of?

The cabs are:
Super off Road.
Pharaohs Gold
Frenzy Express
Vapor Trx.

I've got an idea on which to do just looking for your thoughts.

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

Kinda hard to do to much with those other than restore them.
Introducing The Tone Ledger, a premium 5x7 inch, 100 pg notebook designed for guitarists, bassists, keyboardists...pretty much anyone who enjoys using amps and pedals. Great for experienced musicians, hobbyists, or students just getting started.

Keep Track of Your Tones and Experiment Worry-Free

If the offroad includes all its guts, I would definitely restore that one.  If it's missing everything, your only choice is to MAME it since it's not a JAMMA cab.  I had a gutted Championship Sprint that I MAME'd and it turned out nice.  I was very careful about what I did to install everything so it could be converted back easily, but I doubt that will ever happen.

Vapor Trx definitely looks cool, but I don't know anything about it or the others.  Like Ginsu said, I don't know what you would do with them other than restore them.

OK here's what I currently have planned:

Super Off Road, restore
Pharaohs Gold, remove the gun panel and covert to Mame.
Frenzy Express, not sure its a nice big cab and seller claims it only needs a new PSU so may keep as is.
Vapor TRX, for this I just had a flash of insperation if I remove the sit on bike thing it looks ripe for a Star Wars upright cab  ;D (whats the minimum spec pc for this?)

Vapor TRX is awesome.  It's even better if you can link a couple of them together.

Where I used to work we had one in the shop already, and the boss pulled one off location that had been in a gameroom just off a swimming pool.  All the metal parts were of course rusted.  So they were all pulled, stripped and repainted - but not stock!  They were painted one of the other racer colors, so one was red and the other was blue.  Side by side it was really sweet.

Pharoah's Gold deserves to be MAME'd for having "SPAMmy" words plastered all over it. Keep the theme of it, but cover up those cheesy "win cash!" stickers.

I'd never heard of Frenzy Express until recently. Friend of mine (who owns some games and has a bunch on route) has one. It kinda reminds me of Crazy Taxi, only on a scooter ;D

Ok I think I'll change the Pharaohs gold into a neogeo cab. Using a modded xbox for the games.
