soft-modded wii...how to update to latest firmware version?
« on: December 29, 2009, 03:04:42 pm »
OK, I have my wii (3.2u) modded and working with a usb harddrive.  I was able to install bootmii to boot2 and have a nand backup.

My wife just got a new game (the Jenny McCarthy fitness game) that requires a system update.  So how do I do this update without affecting my mod?   I'm trying to piece together info from gbatemp.net, but a lot of it is going over my head.

Does anyone know of a straightforward guide to update an already softmodded wii to a more recent firmware?

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

You don't want to update. PERIOD.
There are ways around the update (priiloader/bootmii) or you can remove the update (not sure how yet).

Lots of really good information here.

I'm just starting on this, though, so I don't have all the answers yet and maybe someone will come along who knows the exact answer. I do know that you don't have to update and SHOULD NOT DO IT.

Depending on the loader you can play it without the update.  USB Loader GX will patch on the fly taking care of that for you.  I am running 4.1 and can play all of the games that require 4.2.

Note that I can't say for sure it will take care of a discrepancy as large as from 3.2 to 4.2.

It shouldn't hurt to install the game to your hard drive and give it a shot.  Just don't perform the update.

I thought this was true, but wasn't sure, so I didn't say so. Good to know!

And let me just make sure I have this straight:
002 fix in USB Loader GX will keep me from having to update the IOSes that DVD-R users have to use. Correct? If I'm wrong, tell me what I'm wrong about.

I installed to my HDD and tried it, but it gives me an error when I try to run the game..says something about not being able to initialize the camera (I'm using wiiflow by the way as my loader).

I was guessing that since the game is new and is using this new USB camera, that there must be some update that is needed in order to work correctly.

So if that's true, what next?  I know this dop-IOS allows you to install updates manually, but I can't find a "dummy proof" guide for using it.

If it's new, there may be different security on it...though it doesn't sound like it's the type of game to implement anything new, though perhaps you are right and the camera is adding a new thing to it.

FYI - got it working from the disk at least (still doesn't work when installed from the HDD.)

Discussion topic is here:
http://www.wiihacks.com/wiihacks-newbie-discussions-forum/33754-porblem-your-shape-cam-4.html

What I did:
- installed ios 58 that is linked to in the above thread using wad manager
- after that I'm no longer prompted to run the update on the disk channel.  When i run the game via the disk channel it works fine
- wiiflow and loading from my HDD still works fine for other games, but when trying to run  this one (even using Hermes 222 IOS) it says it can't find the camera.   I'm sure there'll need to be a fix on this on the loader side, but for now I can at least let the wifey play the game via the normal disk method.   :)   Thanks for all the suggestions!

Yeah, the stock IOS you have may not actually have the functionality for the camera.  Hadn't thought of that.

Ginsu, I think the error 002 fix in the loader keeps you from having to patch the ISO.  Then again that may be what you meant to say and it's a typo from IOS.  I'm not 100% sure on this one as I do have a chip so I'm not sure where the line is for those who are soft modded only.

Found the answer later on, and I did mean IOS.
