How do you fix no working Roms?
« on: December 28, 2009, 05:10:09 pm »
I have come across several roms that do not work no matter what revision they are. Is there anyway to get them working? Tempest is a good one to start with, I have dl every one I can find and still no luck.

Thanks,

Scott..

I'm limited by the forum rules, so don't take this answer personally:

Search more for the up to date ROM set, or
Search more for the right version of mame that goes with the ROM set you have.

(That's assuming you have the parent rom set.  Mame FAQ)

Maws is a great place for info.  It lists what roms you need, what rom set the said roms are in (usually gameset, but sometimes in the parent's set or bios set), and what versions of mame the rom set changed

Example: if you look up tempest, it changed three times, so you only need to test a total of four versions of mame; one from before any of the changes, one after all the changes, one between the first & second changes, and one between the second & third changes.

Yeah. It really depends on the version of mame you want/need to run. I was running ancient versions of mame with an incomplete Tempest rom fine for a long time until I needed 2 player controls. I had to upgrade to mameui and the old Tempest roms wouldn't work anymore so I hade to find a "complete" romset somewhere to get those 2nd player controls. If I didn't need the 2nd player, I would stick with an older version of mame...
Older versions of mame, especially MACMAME will run games much faster than newer versions I have discovered. In fact, I am running macmame .56a on OS X and I can get mouse input to work! This old version of macmame runs games WAY faster than macmame OS X or even macmame .66!
