WG D9800 help
« on: December 28, 2009, 06:44:24 am »
I have installed my WG D9800 monitor into my new arcade cabinet. I have connected the monitor to my ArcadeVGA 2 card in my computer using a standard VGA cable. When I turn the computer monitor on, I get a white screen displaying NO SIGNAL IN which I would expect. When I turn on the computer, the white screen remains with the message NO SIGNAL IN displayed but overlayed is a very blurred, wavy display of the POST screen which is unreadable. I have not installed windows yet, I was going to do that next but not being able to read the monitor does not help! I was of the understanding that all I had to do was connect the monitor to the computer and that was it, it would display the computer output as standard so that I could go into the BIOS and then install windows. What am I missing? Can anyone shed any light on what the problem may be?

TIA

Subscribing to this thread. I'm picking up my D9800 tomorrow and I hope I won't have the same problem. Sorry I can't help you though.

I don't own an arcade vga so I'm no help, but I recommend you install windows using a standard PC monitor.

After you have finished your installation and configured your emulators THEN hook it up to the arcade monitor.  A lot of frustration will be saved this way I think.

+1 on this advice. Arcade monitors are never as simple as hooking up and being good to go, even if you have the right hardware and interfaces as they were never natively intended for use with a PC as regular VGA monitors are. This is partly why we won't work with them and stick to PC hardware (VGA monitors) only.

Follow this advice first and if you still have no joy, try Andy at Ultimarc for a little help setting up your ArcadeVGA. If toying with graphics/frequency/resolution doesn't resolve it after these steps, it is possible the monitor is faulty. Continue to ask around though and hope you get this working soon.

I'm not familiar with the ArcadeVGA card, but I don't think you need it.  The D9800 is technically a PC monitor and will run on normal VGA input.  I have a D9800 and I'm using a regular ATI graphics card with normal settings (800x600 @ 60Hz) and the BIOS screen (as well as the OS) comes up as it would on a regular PC monitor.  I have been running it for over a year with no problems.

I would suggest swapping out the ArcadeVGA with a standard graphics card as your next step.

I removed the ArcadeVGA card and replaced with a standard Asus NVidia 8600GT card. This only works on my arcade monitor if I have a regular pc monitor attached at the same time. I think it is because I can setup multi monitor configuration and specify the resolution on the arcade monitor as 800 x 600 @ 60Hz. When I do this the arcade monitor displays correctly and using Soft15kz can play all games at the native resolution. When I remove the pc monitor then the arcade monitor does not display correctly because I suspect the PC is automatically switching to a resolution that the arcade monitor does not support (this is while booting up and in windows). Is there any way to sort this i.e. forcing the pc into 800 x 600 @ 60Hz when only the arcade monitor is attached?

One thing that has come out of this is that it looks like the ArcadeVGA card is faulty. Andy says he will be in touch when he returns from his holidays on the 7th Jan.

Cheers

I would try disabling the PC monitor in your config, or set all resolutions to 800x600.  Are you using XP?  In some cases XP will choose a resolution that will best fit the current monitor, but if you manually change it, it should stick.

The DVi out on the avga must be used before installing the drivers for windows for the avga card.
After you successfully load the drivers switch it to the vga out of the card and report back.

OMG!!! Im having the SAME EXACT problem with my d9800 also...but I have a ati 4550 card

I turn on my system, bios posts but the screen scrolls frantically and the monitor says NO INPUT

I tried to find a vertical hold pot..but I thought I read that the pots are factory sealed and cannot be adjusted (***I could be wrong on this***)

Where did you purchase your monitor at?  I picked up mine from Xgaming.

Also...there is a little control panel on the monitor chasis with 5 buttons on them.  Did you try them?  When I press mine, nothing happens...

Well If you find out anything about your problem post it here and I'll do the same.

I Emailed xgaming but I dont think I'll get a response till monday.

Good Luck!!!!
Sav

*EDIT* After thinking about it.  Im using a old RGB cable that I had lying around instead of the one that was shipped...I dunno if it has the same amount of pins or not..but I'll give that a try and let you know.

Guys, have learned many things about my WG D9800 in the few weeks I have had my X-Gaming machine. First is that to get thI ings working right you really need to configure and set up everything using a standard PC monitor. Otherwise, many resolutions get deleted because of the lack of the 9800's plug and play functionality.

This includes setting up Soft 15khz, I could not get it to work to save my life and once I set it up using the PC monitor, then HOT SWAPPED over to the arcade monitor everything worked. Remember to switch your base desktop resolution to 800x600 @60 before hot swapping over to the 9800.

I was able to do this all on Windows 7 64 bit too. Many thanks to SailorSat for putting together Soft 15khz and saving us the hassle of using PowerStrip. Once he implements 35-38khz resolutions the app will be perfect.

GUESS WHAT? I got my D9800 plug and play monitor working!!!

All along it WAS the RGB cable that I used.   I used a spare one that I had lying around instead of using the one that came with the monitor itself.   I looked at the pins and there were was a discrepancy in the 2nd row.

now comes the fun part :(  *software tweaking* hehehehe

Mine was plug'n'play as well. Just plugged it in and installed WinXP (although the first part of the installation screens were cut in half, but I managed :)), then I installed the AVGA2 drivers and the trisync util. Works perfectly. Great monitor!

Yeah, Im speechless on how good this monitor is!  I had a mame cabinet back 8+ years ago with a 1990's WG monitor that was OK at best.. But now this d9800 blows my old monitor out of the water!  like night and day.

just a reminder to all ....  once your bios posts...unplug your WG and connect a computer monitor.  Install your system along with all the drivers...including video.   some where in your video card control panel you can adjust your res and frequency...i used 800x600 60hz ... then you should be set to connect it back up to you WG
