Wii help - NSMB
« on: December 16, 2009, 04:12:59 pm »
We bought the New Super Mario game for my stepson for Christmas (I was going to ask my wife to get it for me so this works out well!  ;D )

I have my Wii softmodded with system 4.0U on there.  I've tried reading through the threads at Wiihacks to figure out how to be able to play this without bricking my system but I haven't found the right guide yet.  Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

I'm not sure if I want to upgrade to 4.1 which comes on the disc I think.  I doubt I would as that can brick the Wii from what I've read.  I'm trying to get this ready so that on Christmas morning, I we can play.   :)

Thanks!

You will need an up-to-date loader to properly play it, else it freezes constantly.

Is that true even if I use the dvd that it game on and don't copy it to my USB drive?

Thanks hypernova and PBJ.  I have Bootmii already but haven't really used it.  I'm checking into Gecko OS now.

Oh, I don't know about using a disc, but I think so, since there seemed to be problems for everyone when it first came out.

Status update:  I updated my system to 4.1u.  I thought that this would allow me to play with the disc without it asking for me to update.  It does ask for the update so I didn't do that.

I can play it through Gecko OS so that's a plus.  Thanks PBJ.  The problem now is I'm not sure that the wife/kids will be able to do that.  The last thing I want is them updating the system and bricking it.

I can read through the 171 pages of the thread at Wiihacks but I'd rather not.  Anyone point me to either a different tutorial or a particular page in there?

I guess it's my fault for using a purchased disc.   :lol

Thanks!

You can put a password on updating the system.

FWIW, I'm still trying to get this game working too.  I finally got a hard drive that the Wii seems to like, ripped it there, and it gave me the 002 error.  I found the 002 fix setting, enabled that, and now it gives me a different error that I didn't write down last night.  I'll have to google that tonight.

I updated to the latest .dol for USB Loader GX then copied the game over.  I have the 002 fix turned on and received a different error when loading the game.  I'd guess it's the same you got Chad.  It was the "eject the disc, turn the sytem off...." error.

Black screen?  Sounds the same.  Did you get past it?

I got a 002 error last night from Punchout too and that was actually working before.   :P

Nope, haven't gotten past it yet.  Still searching for a solution.

If it helps, I did get it working thru Gecko OS as PBJ said without any (apparent) issues.  My concern about that is the wife/kids are used to loading USB loader and starting games that way.  A change to having to go to the Home Brew Channel, launch Gecko OS and then the game may cause some marital issues....

Chad and Hoopz-I suppose our next questions should be:

What revision cIOS are you using?
What loader(s) are you using?

I'm using the latest stable build of USB Loader GX.  Can't remember the version of the cIOS off the top of my head - I can tell you when I get home after looking in my staging area.  Is there a way to determine that on the Wii itself?  I haven't found one yet.

Which revision of the loader, I wonder, though?  Go into your USB Loader GX Settings, and check the Credits.  Should see a revision number for it (and groove to the music while you're at it.) :)  It also shows your cIOS numbers.
Mine reads: Rev844 IOS 249 (Rev 14).
Looks like they're up to 866 here.  As you can see, it is CONSTANTLY updated.  If you're on an old revision, get the .dol file (not the wad, as it has warnings attached to it.  Don't know why the wad is needed.)  Replace the .dol file in the proper loader folder on your SD card (I believe it still needs to be titled boot.dol or whatever, and should be in the apps folder.)

I'm using cIOS rev14 myself as well (which is shown as the IOS 249 rev14 above.)  15 apparently has some issues, and 14 seems to work great.

I'm pretty sure I'm on 14 but can't remember which cIOS that refers to...  ;D

EDIT:  just thought of this.  The USB loader should be at whatever rev the internal Update function brings you to.  I have been checking for USB Loader updates with the internal Update function as I go.  And looking at their site I'm pretty sure it's cIOS38 rev 14.

If on rev 14, that's good.  Just need a possibly updated loader.  See my edited post above.

Parallel edits.  :)  I'll double check everything tonight but I'm betting the issue is more on the ISO side than the installed side.  Thanks!

I just checked that, and it doesn't seem to update to the newest builds.  Perhaps because they haven't been deemed full, "stable" releases.  I can tell you right now that 844 is just as stable as the original one I downloaded months ago.

I downloaded the .dol today and also updated twice.  It still shows my rev at .5XX.  That's most likely my issue.  I'll figure out why it's not updating soon.

I'm also on cIOS38 rev 14.  Must be the loader.  Hopefully....

I think I'm finally behind on the tech curve.  I understand about everything I can break/fix on my modded Xbox.  This Wii stuff though really doesn't make sense.   :-\

Hoopz = newb   :tool:

Alright, I figured out my issue.  I launch USB Loader from a channel and it doesn't update.  When I launch it from HBC, I see I'm at the latest revision.

So what do I need to do to get my channel pointing at the right place?

I should just look for a torrent with the wad for the latest revision of the channel...

That makes sense.  The release notes for the newest rev shows that it has a "Beta Update" function.  That's pretty sweet.

Once I launched the updated USB Loader, I was able to copy the game again and get things working.  Thanks for your help Hypernova and PBJ.

Look up forwarders.  You actually have the old GX as a channel, so every time a new one comes out, you need to replace the channel, which means installing it via the HBC.  If you get a forwarder as the channel, you can just replace the .dol on the SD card, and the forwarder will never need updated.  I think the GX site has forwarders on there as well.  There are forwarders for the USB Loader GX, and most, if not all of the emulators, though you need to find those elsewhere.  If you can't find them, I can probably help you out.

Thanks Hypernova, that was it.  I knew I wasn't doing it properly but hadn't quite figured it all out yet.  Your post clarified a lot of the problems I was having.  I do have a couple of other emulators on there so I'll search for forwarders for them.

Thanks much for all of the help.
