Where to get a good and cheap 2003/2004 era VGA card?
« on: December 14, 2009, 05:26:38 pm »
Maybe OT, but I do want this for MAME too!

I have a 2003 PC that I still use and want to keep running for another year or so before I build a modern machine. It's maybe 1.4GHz and 1 or 2-gig RAM. It has an ATI All-in-Wonder 8500/DV AGP card in it. The ATI Catalyst drivers under Win2000 are not the best, but the machine works fine for MAME and low-end gaming.

I do more and more in Linux with that machine, and the ATI card is really wonky in Linux (ATI didn't start to produce Linux drivers until the next generation cards). I have it working acceptably at 1920x1800 but OpenGL doesn't work. That's bad for gimp and games.

So I thought I'd pick up a cheap old 1x/2x AGP card (or a PCI card if that makes sense). Maybe a GeForce 6800 series card or something similar. I think I'm done with ATI. Too much craziness in Linuxland...

Suggestions on a good card or that era for cheap? I don't want to throw any money at it because I could/should build a new machine with that money instead.

Thanks in advance.
