Monitor/Transformer Question
« on: December 10, 2009, 11:43:11 am »
Hi There,

I have a cabinet which looks like its already had its monitor replaced before. The cabinet is Korean, but it has a Hantarax monitor (which is italian) and an iso transformer mounted inside (giving it 230v).

The Hantarax monitor has now fried itself, and i'm looking to replace it with a 100V AC monitor (Nanao 29").
The original transformer is still in there, which gives out 110v..

Would the monitor be ok with a 110 voltage? i hear monitors have tolerance levels, i cant see anything written on my monitor about that, but im not sure what the upper and lower limits are... itll probably shorter the lifespan, but for the sakes of buying an installing another transformer, id prefer to do that

any advice appreciated

thanks

sean

is there a way to find a tolerance level?  and doesn't this shorten the lifespan??

imo no as i had manx tt and sega rally running very nicely and they are over 15 years old-i have a feeling your biggest problem will be wiring up the degauss as i am sure you have a nanao ms9-29 which uses a push button degauss.mind you if you are in the u.k then thats easy to sort as i know a few people with the correct wiring loom

i've had a bit of a look around the monitor now...

i need to re-wire some on the connections... i currently have a Hantarex Polostar, and the wiring is quite different. Is there a manual for this anywhere? I have some cables with this one, but i'm not sure what the leads are.

I have a new astro city manual which uses a Nanao 29", but the level of level isnt enough

post up a photo of what you have and i will tell you exactly what goes where,i have worked on numerous hantarex and nanao's
one thing to know is that the nanao has a manual deguass whereas the polostar is auto so you will need to add a momentary action switch

hi there,

thanks for the reply! ive managed to take a few photos of the cabinet, let me know if you need any more and ill try and get them asap.!

My current setup is:
230V in --> 110v transformer --> 230v transformer --> 230v hantarex

what im looking to replace with
230V in --> 110v transformer --> 100v nanao

230v transformer with connections

Hantarex power  (looks like standard mains wiring - this goes to the top of the 230v transformer (blue, brown, yellow/green))

Hantarex Video Socket (the green one)

Hantarex Video 2 (view of the cable; think this goes to the jamma - i can double check)

Nanao connections

Nanao connections with board [MS9-29S]

hope this is enough info!

thanks for the help!!

yeah easy job,do you have a multimeter?
double check the output of the transformer is indeed 110v,if so connect the 2 wire loom(pink and blue/pink) to 110 v ac tranformer out
connect the signal colours together(5 wire plug) i.e black to black and so on
mount the degauss switch somewhere in the coin door area

Hi there,

thanks for the reply, it was really helpful!  the video wires map onto what i have nicely, im just concerned over the power... it was kinda hard to explain, but i hope the picture explains it a little better!!

Im just a bit stumped on how to map the black wire onto the pink-blue/pink wires.... i'm not sure what these (pink/blue) wires represent. are they both power?  for example, can i join both of them to the black wire (see diagram)?

nearly there i think!!

don't do this without checking the voltage with a multimeter,
it should go 230v/0v into the transformer and then 110v/0v out to the monitor, you should post a photo of the original transformer
if you put 230v into a nanao it will blow up and they are an extremely nice monitor

that's for the help!!

managed to take the 230v transformer out and wire it directly to the 110v one.... i had to saw off a bit of the frame to fit the screen in, the size was 1" bigger, but you can't even notice from the outside with the glass and stickers back on.

I put the multimeter on it and it came up as 120v(?), but the screen seems to work fine and crystal clear!  and you mentioned before that 120v into a 100v monitor is okay because of the tolerance levels?

cheers

yep 120vac is fine, almost every sega machine i have ever worked on is 120vac unless its a japanese import with the correct stepdown installed
