Motorola Droid + Google Voice = free text messaging?
« on: November 09, 2009, 12:06:32 pm »
just curious about the combination of the Droid/Android OS and google voice.  i have an iphone and im tired of it.  i hate itunes, i hate ATT, and just generally hate apple even more so now with my iphone frustrations.  SO...im looking to get a new phone.  i'll probably wait a few months and see what other phones come out with Android on them, but this is just a general question about the phone plans and what not, should i switch.

i have a google voice number, and i can send/receive sms to my friends.  i know that with android, you google voice obviously works natively.  so i was just looking at verizon's plans, and saw that you can (like ATT) get txt messaging for a fee determined by the tier of txt msg plan.  but cant i just use google voice and not pay for text messaging at all?  yeah ill get the data plan and stuff for the web, but if i have a google voice number, do i need a txt plan at all?

SMS on a smart phone with a data package = FAIL
Go Japan, and learn that push mail is way more logical on a phone than a service intended for informing about network hickups.

My next phone will almost certainly be android based.

From what I've been reading the android os is now on a par with apple's for features and usability. However, even if it was significantly worse, I'd still buy an android based phone because android is open source. For me that overrides all other considerations. I'm sick of the control freak mentality of Apple, Microsoft et al.

Speaking of Google Voice, I want it.  Anybody have an unused invite?
