Basic Arcade Monitor questions
« on: October 28, 2009, 01:26:25 pm »
Ive got 4 empty cabs that I will eventually try to bring back from the dead...I'm very interested in having an arcade monitor placed inside...
I was wondering if anybody can point me in the right direction...

Arcade monitors....What brand or type is the most common? best price? pros and cons? Best place to shop?

I was thinking of maybe a 19 inch maybe...(the cabs are generic cabs...old 4-way verticals)...

I'm not worried about PC monitors or TV...just the Arcade monitors...I want to learn more about em, and with the upcoming projects, I want to use one...but I have NO idea where to start...

I'm assuming you're MAME'ing the cabs.

The biggest thing for noobs to keep in mind is that arcade monitors are very commonly LOW RESOLUTION (less than 640x480, for the most part). To interface your PC to an Arcade monitor you'll have to go one of two routes usually.

ArcadeVGA - Buy whichever card matches your motherboard, either AGP or PCI-e. From there it's usually plug n play. These cards are iffy with x64 OSes, from my understanding.
-OR-
Soft-15KHz - Hit or miss if it will work with your video card. Most Radeon 9200 or higher cards seem to work well, and most nVidia cards newer than Series 4 (i've got am on-board geforce 400 series running it) should work, with updated forceware (offhand i believe it's forceware 66.71).

After that, it's a matter of wiring Red to Red, Green to Green, Blue to Blue, a Ground, and a Sync.

Pinouts.ru Is a good place to find your VGA pinouts.

Dillon....notttttt exactly....

I should have been more precise....I have done maming in the past...but One of the cabs I want to try and build a 48-n-1 if possible...
I basiclly have a empty cab, and i want to try something else than just shoving a PC in ....( basicly build a arcade cab from stratch)...
or if the pocketbook cant handle the stress, then yeah, mame it with a arcade monitor...

By question is what is the most common brand out there that is reasonably priced, and durable? Wells, Phillips, etc? I dont know...
What vendors do mostly everybody order from?...
Basicly if you wanted to get a an arcade cab monitor, who would you go to?
