New Dreamcast cases?
« on: October 23, 2009, 09:46:15 pm »

I'm thinking of getting Crazi Taxi for a friend who absolutely loves the game (which has rubbed off on me i must say  :) ). I notice that Dreamcast case hinges break really easily. Are replacement cases available easily? DJ?

This would be a great birthday present for him as he spent many an hour on this game at his brothers, in London years ago. His brother was actually part of the development team for a (or the) 3d chip in the Dreamcast so you could almost say it's in his blood!

Buy some Sega sports game that no one wants and steal the case from that? :P

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

I don't see what's so different about the case compared to any other jewel case. :dunno

He's in Europe, the Dreamcast had different styled jewels than North America.

Yes, the PAL dreamcast cases break really easily :( Most often one or both of the hinges snap off, then the teeth that hold the gd-roms inside snap off after that. It really doesn't take much to do, either.. a moderate drop will pretty much destroy one.

That said, they do look really really good (imo) :)

I haven't been able to find any replacement cases personally, I'll keep an eye on this thread incase anyone does as I'd like a few myself.

Im in Australia actually, but yeah the PAL cases look great, but the hinges are really weak. I think maybe the best bet is DJ's suggestion then!

Yep. One brand new Crazi Taxi on Ebay has broken hinges AND broken spindle and it's still in the cellophane!

I dunno how it is in Oz but here the only Dreamcast games I can even FIND in used game stores are Sega sports titles.  Anual sports titles seem to fill a lot of used gamestore shelves.

Same here. I'll keep an eye out for bargains on ebay. If I can't get something unbroken I'm sure my friend won't mind. His birthday is in January. I also have to get him an actual Dreamcast! He wasn't big on games until he met me. I introduced him to MAME (in my cocktail) and he introduced me to Crazi Taxi and his brother! I could go for NTSC stuff but he's not big on home entertainment and so i'm not sure if his current tv supports NTSC. Obviously the next tv he gets will, but this one seems like it will last forever...
