XBOX 360 Falcon chipset
« on: October 17, 2009, 12:18:36 pm »
Good or Crap?

Have a chance to get a new modded 360 Pro/60 gig HD for $270 shipped, but the Pros did not get the Jasper chips.  Sells for $250 new.........

Haven't heard back from the guy with the RE5 package that's not usually a good sign.

I've seen a couple on Craigslist locally but no replies to my emails yet.
Learning how to tell the chipsets apart thru Google.
I'm not in a hurry, I just wanna get a reliable one for Xmas.

Thanks again for your input.

The RE5 units were the first elite 360's to have the Jasper chipset, and that is the only chipset I would even consider buying used.

All others chipsets are guaranteed crap.

The Falcon's still have issues, the Jasper is the way you wanna go, especially if a mod has voided your warrenty.  Personally, while I'm fairly confident in my new Arcade with a Jasper board, I'm not gonna mod it so as to always have that three year red ring warrenty to cover me.

I have the Falcon chipset in my Elite with the Hitachi drive. Personally, I would not buy anything that isn't a Jasper. Falcon may have a lower fail rate with Jasper being lower but why settle for something less superior? I hear the Jaspers run cooler and thus less noise. Only thing I hate about my Xbox other than being a ticking time bomb is the noise.

Far as modding, all the Xbox's far as I know are moddable. Isn't too hard, youtube it for an introduction. You will need to learn how to do it anyways when new firmwares get released.

I ended up getting one here locally for $225, apparently a Falcon chipset.
Came with 10 original games, so I tool the crap ones to Gamestop and traded out for a spare controller.
Works fine, stays cool (I leave it plenty of room to breathe just in case!)
and plays anything I throw at it as long as I patch it if needed.
Hopefully I'll get some mileage out of this one.
Gonna try GTA Liberty City Stories, time get get busy slappin up some ho's!  >:D

Thanks again, ARCADIAC!

Are the Falcon chipsets newer than the Jaspers?  What's the latest chipset out now that's the best to get?  Thanks.

Jasper is the newest.  There are several ways to find out which chipset before you buy, just Google "differences in xbox 360 chipsets".

Good luck and happy gaming!

My launch console is still going strong without any issue's after the correct cooling mods were done before I even used it.

pretty much the cooling sucks in any version with any chip and their all prone to overheat and croke unless the proper cooling mods are done.

I'm inclined to disagree with this.  The overheating and failures of the 360 are a HUGE financial loss to the program.  MS had to create a 1 billion dollar fund for the three year red ring program.  Any 'mods' that could be done, I'm confident that Microsoft is implimenting and far better (Such as die shrinking the CPUs so the make less heat in the first place) for the simple financial reasons.  The problem wasn't the 360's cooling, it was the ammount of heat it's GPU produced in the first place which was absurdly high.  And the Jasper seems to have fully or near-fully corrected this.

Well, not really.  So far the reported failure rates of the Jasper motherboards has been about 3%-5% which is about, but slightly higher than industry standard failure rate for a consumer electronic.  The standard being 3% on average.

So I wouldn't call that 'dropping like flies'.
