Paperboy
« on: July 17, 2003, 07:48:01 am »
Anyone have any problems with Paperboy on their cabinets?

The digital speech & audio stutters a lot, and the controls (Happ Utimate 8 Ways) seem to want to send the character right or left instead of straight. I've verified that the sticks aren't shorting out at all and sending random keypresses.

The PC is an AMD Athlon XP 2000+ with 256mb RAM, Windows XP (stripped to the bone), Mamewah, and SmoothMame.

Any ideas? I used to play it on a P3 800 with a gamepad and it worked fine!

Paperboy is an analog control game. So it is kind of iffy with any gamepads or joysticks.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

Is there any way to increase performance with an 8 way stick?

Would it work well with an analog PC joystick.  I'm thinking of adding a standard PC joystick to my cabinet (either built in or with a special removable base).   I believe that "Food Fight" is another analog stick game, so it could help with that as well.

Maybe I will just put my gamepad in and make it so that you can easily connect/disconnect it.

If your PC gamepad has anlog controls on it (like the playstation controllers) then it just might work.  The analog controls are the little knobs that rotate in all directions, not the up, down, left, right control (that's essentially an eight way joystick). I've heard of a number of people adding USB hubs or extensions to their cabinets, for just that thing.
