Acer one aspire netbook owners with SSD
« on: October 14, 2009, 04:51:26 pm »
I'm just throwing this out there in case any of you or your loved ones were unfortunate enough to purchase an acer one aspire SSD version netbook a few months back. My mother made this mistake, even after reading the reviews of people who literally thew the things out of two story windows out of frustration. Being a creature of impulse, (she's Italian) she got one anyway.... well low and behold she herself got so frustrated with it that she wound up throwing the thing across the room one day. I don't blame her either, if you have ever gotten your hands on one of these things, to say they suck would be an understatement. Looking at the specks you would expect you were purchasing a machine that would at least let you run windows and surf the net... in fairness it does...if you have five to ten minuets to let the thing boot and another two or three minuets every time you want to run an app. Turns out that Acer used a really bad SSD in the things. I don't know if a couple of months ago all SSD's were that bad, or just the samsung units in the Acer ones. (I'm curious to know though if anyone has any insight into them) Long story short my mother was about to go out and buy another netbook, after only having this one for about three or four months. I told her to leave it with me and I would see what I could do with it. After doing some research I ran across this site which told me how to take the thing apart and how to replace the harddrive..http://tnkgrl.wordpress.com/2008/08/14/modding-the-acer-aspire-one-bluetooth/   http://tnkgrl.wordpress.com/2008/08/16/modding-the-acer-aspire-one-hard-drive/ After a little more research I stumbled across this little gem! http://www.supertalent.com/datasheets/6_182.pdf Well after doing the necessary surgery I am happy to report back to all Acer one owners, that this upgrade makes a night and day difference in the thing. For about $50.00 and a few hours of my time, my mother couldn't be more happy with it. So if you have an acer one aspire, or perhaps are looking for a dirt cheap netbook (there are plenty of people on ebay looking to rid themselves of this misery) Try this upgrade, in the end you will have a usable zippy little netbook if you do.

I never had a problem with them to be honest.

I think this would be filed under user error than product malfunction or you had a bad batch.

I would recommend them.
If I had only one wish, it would be for three more wishes.

It certainly wasn't user error, the first thing I tried to do was to reformat it and do a factory restore from the disks using an external DVD drive, and that didn't help it in the slightest. When I say it was slow, I am not exaggerating when I say it would take five to ten minuets to load XP.... with a freshly reformatted drive! It could have been a bad drive, I have no idea how reliable these SSD's are, however some of the older models apparently really were awful. I can't remember the model # off the top of my head, but I can check that.

Flash has a limited read and write cycle.  Its supposed to be ridiculously high... However,
Windows writes and re-writes files over and over again.  Very easy to max out a
memory bank.

When one bank goes bad... the drive then has to move the data to a different area..
skipping over the bad bank.  When you get swiss cheese worth of data and bad
banks...  your pc will take Forever to try to read and write to areas... as all the data
will be scattered everywhere, all out of order / jumbled up with other non-corresponding
data.

SSD/Flash  is an Awful idea to use as a HD.  They should be using high MB DDR type ram,
battery line feed to keep its memory, and a HD as a backup should it fail.

OK the version, my mother has is the ZG5. It was the first one to have XP, actually it had two versions, one with linnux and one with XP. After doing more research,  I have come to the conclusion that this version pretty much sucked. I did however find something interesting for people with machines with SSD drives http://flashfire.org/xe/?mid=notice
I wonder if this really works? All I know is I wish I had found this and tried it out before I spent $$ on a new SSD for her. Oh well!
