Cleaning up after a leaking cap
« on: October 13, 2009, 07:58:15 am »
Hello! New to the forum and currently working on bringing an old robotron back to life.

I recently picked up a used WG K7000 and plan on replacing all the caps. I noticed one cap has leaked onto the P447 circuit board. Any advice on cleaning that dried brownish good off of the circuit board? I touched the goo with a probe and it's hardened. I was thinking isopropyl alcohol with a toothbrush, but wondering if anyone has tips other than this for getting it up off the board?

Thanks!

Sounds more like glue.  Don't bother, it won't affect performance.

That's just the glue Wells-Gardner applies to some capacitors to secure them from breaking loose during shipment.

Yeah, if it oozed, it'd be cracked and perhaps slippery.

personally , i remove that crap.
had many a tv that the "glue" ate through a component and/or a trace or two.

it can absorb moisture and then cause corrosion ....

Heat gun or hair dryer on Super hot, and then a nice tiny hobby knife. Especially if it's anything like the epoxy on an xbox 360 DVD drive.

Thanks for the tips! I'm just glad it's not super corrosive
