Multiple PCBs
« on: October 12, 2009, 02:42:25 pm »
Hi people!
I'm wondering; if I connect all the signals on an XBOX1 joypad to all the signals on an XBOX360 joypad, like A,B,X,Y,L,R,dpad,GND and 5V, would I be able to join the XBOX1 and XBOX360 USB cables together into one? So that when I connect the cable into the 360, only the 360 PCB would be working... and vice versa? Both pads have common ground. I suck at explaining.

Not the way you have it drawn. I may be wrong, but you've effectively created a USB Y cable and that pretty much violates the USB standards.

What are you trying to do? On initial glance, it looks like you're trying to make a CP that's compatible with either the Xbox or 360, but why hack off the Xbox cable and replace it with a USB cable? That leaves you with a controller that's kind of useless on the Xbox and is pointless for anything else due to the existence of the 360 controller. You can keep the existing connector with some minor modifications. With the proprietary xbox jack, no one will mistakenly plug it into the 360.

As for the connections between the two controllers, I don't know. The answer is a wash due to the USB splice you drew up.

I'm not trying to be an ass, but if you tell us what your goal is, any number of us can offer you a solution that might fit your needs better.

Also why the need for the USB and the 15 pin connector?

Thanks for the replies, guys!
I got the idea to join the XBOX and XBOX360 PCBs from slagcoin: http://slagcoin.com/joystick/pcb_wiring.html <- bottom of page.
They didn't join the USB cables there, though.

Here's what I wanted to do:
Joined PCBs in project box with 15pin connector, for connecting arcade controls and hacked retro gamepads.
The XBOX1's joypad ports are just USB, with a bulky proprietary connector. I've got adapters to make standard USB equipment fit into the ports. So I figured I could just join the joypad PCBs together, and it would work on both boxes..  :dunno

This won't work? It's beyond my skills, I guess, so I should just make separate project boxes for each respective platform.

Yes, this is how you will have to do that.
