Bought an old Taito Ms Pac Man-Quix game today for $40.00 Seems the power supply is dead? The cabinet is rough with water damage I may be able to replace the sides, not sure this one is worth saving. Im not in it a lot, maybe I should part it out. not sure how to check the power supply. There was a switch in the front left corner with four wires going to it. two white and two black. They were disconnected. Do i need to hook these white/white black black? or white/Black white/black? What is the next step to testing the power supply? There is AC at the auxillary plug now (After repairing the initial fuse block. Any suggestions? Are any of the parts valuable?

OK I realize now that it is not a Ms Pac Man QIX combo. Clearly its a marquee only converted QIX. I'm hoping to identify the PCB. Does anyone recognize it?

Ok two more hours of tinkering and troubleshooting and the game plays(ms pacman bootleg like correct rom)!!! sound, video, buttons, coin, and gameplay not bad for $40. So for the rebuild I have decided to pretty much make a new cabinet identical to the current. And move over the guts and monitor mounting, speaker board and coin door. The big problem though is that the 5 Amp Slow Blow fuse keeps blowing (instantly) I put a car overhead lamp in the fuse holder to get it to play (It lights up bright, meaning I have a short or bad component). http://arcadeconnection.serverbox.org/schema/qix-schematic.pdf Its the F2 fuse in this diagram. I dont know what to do next, any ideas? Now that I know it works I can put a little money in it. The screen is grey, but not burned in. Looking for suggestions. (I dont have the QIX board and dont really want a QIX game.)

Taito cabs are my favorite design. I really like their profile and height / width ratio.

First, get that bulb out of there! It's blowing for a reason. By doing what you're doing, you're damaging something by letting it run.

Take everything off that particular circuit and reinstall one by one until you find the trouble spot.

Ok, I pulled the circuit board and learned something interesting. The circuit is not shorted untill I hook it to the brick. Does anyone know what this means?

Determined that the Bridge Rectifier (Which is the first component off the fuse holder) is dead on two segments. planning on replacing it with this one, is that ok? http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062584 does it sound like I'm barking up the right tree?

Junkyard Arcade $40. Blown Fuses $5. Bridge Rectifier $6 Working Ms Pac Man Qix Conversion ...Priceless. Needless to say the Bridge Rectifier Fixed it. I say junkyard because it was literraly on a pallet stored on a metal rack, outdoors. No idea how long it had been there, but at least it doesnt rain much in Las Vegas. That said, one side and the top and front have a lot of water damage and there is a damaged corner and now I am at a crossroads... To repair? repaint? remake the cabinet? I could sell it as is for four times what I paid for it and put the money in a scratch build. Just dont know what to do. I know as this it the restoration forum and everyone will say restore to QIX. (Which I am not interested in doing.) I'll add pictures for advice on the water damage. Does anyone have any experience with wood hardner?

So last night I emptied the now working cabinet. Laid it on its side and cleaned the edges and surface of the one good side with a belt sander. Today I'm getting new lumber to rebuild the cabinet. I intend to use the one good existing side to make duplicates I'll make 4 blanks and use two to rebuild the cabinet and 2 to do a scratch build mame. Not sure how I'll decorate the Ms Pacman. Its not the right shape to do a real ms pac. I could change the shape since I'm replacing the sides anyways. Cause in reality it's a Taito Qix with a fake Ms Pacman PCB and a conversion marquee, so it will never be a true restoration. I think I'll use the Tatito shape, paint it Ms Pacman Bluem with no graphics and a generic bezel and CP .

why not keep it in Taito colors and design? It's not like there's any shortage of Ms Pac cabinets.

Well how it will look is still undecided. But i'm going ahead with the faithfulish cabinet replication.

Sturdy 2X4 bases cause these taitos had particleboard bases that crumbled with time. Seems every restore requires new feet.

Copying the one good side with a router. I made a second set of sides to make a scratch build mame with LCD.

Its coming together nicely. Cant believe I only bought this Sunday.

Made speaker Panel, top, front and a couple parts of back for assembly tomorrow. I am interested in ideas for how it will look. it will play ms pacman perhaps taito stencils in blue and pink?

I can't tell for sure from the pictures, but that Qix control panel looks to be in pretty good shape. Since there is no reproduction available for that control panel, you may want to see if any Qix owners would like to swap panels with you. (that is, if you are planning on going with a Ms. Pac looking paint job)

Im looking for ideas about how to do the back door if anyone has any posts that show something you think would work please clue me in. Currently I'm leaning towards screwed on panel, but I'd rather have a door. I happen to have a new piano hinge lying around.

That's amazing! I wish I had that skill. And the tools.

The back door on an original Taito was on a hinge with a locking mechanism that would secure both the top and bottom of the door, from the right, when you turned the key.

What I'd do is cut the door and instead of using a lock I'd use screws to secure it into the wood. A couple of PLYWOOD (not MDF) blocks to screw into (so it doesn't get ripped out (which it probably wouldn't but I got my training keeping stuff on the street intact, not in the home)) and off you go.

If you were looking for something original you'll have to ask around for the locking mechanism.

Got the door figured out, thanks for the compliment. For tools... Router $100, flush bit $25, slot cutter $25, chop saw $100 (not totally necessary), Radial arm saw with angle capability $100. Air nailer $20 harbor freight, used air compressor $40, belt sander $80 (not totally necessary). That is all I used. One tip is to get some panels cut to the interior width, the floor, top, front, back and shelf all have the same width. Then at home all you need is one Straight cut per panel.

Completed the door last night reusing the Taito hinges. Then I added a simple lock to the other side. I decided to install the circuit board power supply and wiring harness. Next thing you know it was all hooked up and I turned it on to make sure it still worked. (I had had a close call with the circuit board while it was out.) What do you know it still works!

Also filled some alignment holes with wood putty, next a little sanding and primer.

Dinner at my Mother's house and Survivor and a late night painting session. Paint from Home Depot Glidden Rapsody.

Scored a CP overlay on eBay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220495472411&ssPageName=ADME:B:BCA:US:1123. Now I'll have to relocate/fill some holes in the QIX CP. Plan on backing with metal using bonding epoxy and then fill with Bondo. This is my big weekend project.

Dragged to Dinner and a casino tonight. Painted the black areas when I got home. Also bought a small sandblaster from Harbor Freight and tomorrow I'm going to try to blast the coin door and CP (Crossing Fingers)

only spent a few hours on the project today due to football. Stripped/Rebuilt the coin door added T-molding. Worked on stripping the CP vinyl. Holy crap that stuff is tough. I'm open to suggestions on removing the old thick vinyl. It is so strong. I heard someone put in their barbeque. Any other great tricks? Should I just use a belt sander?

Finally removed the Vinyl from the CP with a $25 Lowes heat gun. And a $1 Scraper.

Thanks for the advice guys! Slammed the monitor back in and it looks like I'll need a Cap Kit.

Anyways I roughed up the back of the CP and Epoxied some electrical plates over the holes i dont need. Eventually I'll Bondo the front and Drill the 3 correct Ms Pacman holes. Did the Marquee Yesterday.

An hour later...

Havnt worked on the cab much for the last two days because I had to put down my 15 year old dog.

Anyways I'm looking for assistance with a video problem I'm having now. Any suggestions? It looked ok last time I had it together. Took the monitor out to paint it and now it has some issues. Any suggestions? I determined it's a Wells Gardner K4600.

OK I vastly improved the worminess by grounding the monitor chassis to the power supply chassis.
I still have a red miss pacman and a droop on the right side.
