Blue nova formaly known as Black and white
« on: October 09, 2009, 05:56:09 pm »
Hi all,

I drawn myself a cab and put many colorschemes on it but before ordering parts i need to know the color. Just wondering what you guys think about it. black or white.

With the black I cant go wrong, but the white seems more original, but i'm a bit afraid that the white would get dirty after a while.

If the white gets dirty, it would clean up pretty easily, especially if you use laminate on the sides.

The black one looks more "arcade-ish" than the white one. Then again it's probably because a lot of arcade cabs were black and rarely white...

You could do a black-to-white gradient?  ;)

You'd have to make an image of the gradation and import it as texture, pretty easy really

How about half black, half white? It can be a tribute to MJ. :)

Or a tribute to Ikaruga.

If you go with the white, you should try to get that cool macbook-like finish, though I'm sure it'll take a bunch of sanding in-between a lot of coats. I personally like the  white better, seems classier to me.

Thanks for the replies

Yea the mac book look is realy nice, not sure of i should use a high shiny laqueer then or a semi.

Has anyone came across a white cab? Cause i have not seen one. would be nice to see a real example.

I really like the white one myself. Looks good with the black T-molding. I like the shape of your cab too.

I decided to go with the black version with white molding, sticks and buttons. I feel the white cab looks good on the renders but i think it has the risk to look like some cheep furnature. Also I cant find any decent artwork for it. I have included some new pics.

JLF sticks, buttons and Ipac have been ordered.

On a side note:

Has anyone ever thought about including an ambiant color system in hes cab? I found a web site wich explains how you can build one similar to the Philips ambiant televisions. This gives a realy amazing experience.

http://lx.divxstation.com/article.asp?aId=151&page=1

I believe you can also buy a set for decent price.

but isnt ambient supposed to be when you are looking at a tv,watching a film, its like, instead of just seeing the square pic, light shines from behind the tv to glow around the edges of it.

well considering your head will be what,2-3 ft away from screen with a big cab with the monitor in would be a waste of time.i mean, who wants to sit looking at their cab on in the corner not doing anything but, running demos?

if thats the case you might as well wang led's inside it,route out some slots and let the light shine on the wall behind the cab or even better, just get a lamp on a stand and put it behind the cab.

bottom line, waste of time for an arcade machine as the experience of arcade is not meant to be ambient when your stood playing it.

Update 18-10-2009:

I did some small redesigning of my cab. Color scheme changed to black with blue moldings, sticks and buttons. I basicly found it hard to find matching artwork for the black and white theme.

The control panel is lowered by 50mm cause it sat to high. It's now at 1025 mm. Also it is no longer inclinated but straight for the reason that it is still lower then my elbows. Having an inclinated CP looks nicer but I prefer to have a bit more comfort. The look of the panel is no longer mortal kombat look but a more common used cp box with a flat panel on it.

I started working on the CP this weekend. The sides of the box are put together and it all turned out great. First time I used a router and its one hell of a nice tool to work with. Did some round corners and stuff. I hope my parts arrive soon.

Bummer.

Black and white is a much more interesting and unique choice. Everybody does black and blue.

I did black and blue, but would change it in a second if I could go back in time. It just makes it that much more generic.

I totaly agree with you. But i am realy not into making custom artwork. I tried with photoshop and illustrator but ---gosh-darn--- not my cup of tea.

The black and blue is done alot but you must admit you only know that if you dwell around here, the thing is that in my social, work and family environment there is nobody with a cab, let alone that they have seen anything like this.

Basicly i went a bit for the easy way. This is also my first project I am totaly new to this, even to woodworking so I dont wont to be bothered to much with custom artwork.

True.

I've not once had anyone in person comment on how "already done" my black and blue arcade machine is.

Generic UAII cab in Black and Blue...

It is a great color scheme for sure. I was just excited to see the black & white. You could have done a nice Sin City cab. :)

Damn, I really should offer my artist services for the community, for a nominal rate of course. I'm a 10 year pro animator/artist with drawing skills in photoshop and illustrator. I'm in-between jobs at the moment, which is why I can do daily work on my cocktail cabinet.  I'm thinking once I'm done this cabinet (in a few weeks I'm thinking), I could be commissioned to do some custom artwork.  If anyone is interested, let me know!

Well I am more into abstract artwork. I need my wife on my side to have this in our livingroom. I realy don't wont my arcade to stand in some seperate room. Atm i have laptop, a 22inch tft monitor with an XBOX360 next to the tv. This also includes all the wiring that comes with it and it's not a pretty sight.
The plan is to build a mame cabinet which also functions as a jukebox and an XBOX station and incorporates that 22" tft. This would be much nicer then my current sollution. Therefore it should look clean and smooth with a mixture of classic and with a modern touch.

Today i am a little bit in the mist.

As you see on the image I included my CP is a box with a flat plate on it, similar to many others i have seen here.

Now my questions are regarding the fixation of the bottom plate and the top plate. I kinda wondered how you guys do it or would do it. I would like to always be able to acces the insides, so i thought it would be best that I make the bottom plate removable. After removal of the bottomplate I would also like that it is possible to remove the top plate from the CP.

I also thought about installing hinges on the top plate so that it opens from there but then I am a bit concerned that this would not be so firm. I mean by that, it could be possible if you pull on the stick that the panel opens shortly or am I exagerating?

Please share youre sollutions/opinions some picture would be helpfull too.
