Wii mod question
« on: October 08, 2009, 09:56:15 am »
For those of you that have modded your Wii and you CANNOT use Bootmii as boot2, did you load preloader or just let it be and try not to do something stupid to brick it? Mine says I have to install it as ISO or whatever but I am worried about bricking my machine. I just got it like a week ago and the wife would not be happy if I bricked it that quickly. My goal is to be able to put games on an external hard drive. I don't like leaving a disc in the machine and I don't like having to swap them all the time.

I simply have mine set up with usb loader and nothing for possible bricking.  I have not had any problems so far.

Don't delete IOS files, and you shouldn't have any newfound white bricks lying around.

Well, I modded it and I put preloader on but it was not the patched version that works with the new hackmii versions of bootmii and the HBC. Now I have to figure out how to take that off and install the patched version. I also stopped just short of hooking up the hard drive. I ran out of time. But I did play a little bit of Zelda on the NES emulator. Very cool.

Why not just drop the VC version of Zelda on?  That is bound to work better than the emulator.

Right now I don't know what is what. I found the nes emulator and it worked very well. I will look up VC and see what that offers. :) It is all fun for now as long as I don't brick it. If I can figure out that preloader.

Load Punchout in the emulator and that will tell you exactly how good the emu is...

I loaded Mike Tyson's punchout last night and played the first guy and that was good. I didn't see any graphic glitches or anything. I did notice that it wouldn't load tengen tetris which is a huge bummer. We LOVE that version. I hate the others.

Glass Joe won't tell you much... you need to get to the harder guys.  That's the game that seems to suffer the most, by far, from timing issues.  If the timing is off even a fraction of a second the game is 10x harder than it should be.  It's pretty damn hard as it is.

A little off topic here but,
I would like to softmod my Wii to play backup copies of games (my daughter is soooo hard on the discs I've bought Mario Kart twice already).  My system has been updated to 4.2.  Everything that I have tried has not worked.  Any advice would be great.  Thanks guys!

God, Chad, give it a rest already.  Nobody plays that game for more than 10-15 minutes at a stretch anyway, we all know the patterns.

I do.  And damn, we better stop playing Pac Man, the patterns are up on the intarwebs for all to see!  I can see the ending to Zelda on Youtube so everyone may as well just burn their copies now and save themselves the trouble of playing it.

Did you try the bannerbomb that was updated to have 2 versions? Do you have the HBC on there yet? I believe you can get the HBC and stuff on there with the newer version of bannerbomb. I have not tried it though.

The new banner bomb will get me the HBC, but that doesn't let me play backups....does it??  I thought you needed backup launcher or something like that to make backups work.  Thanks again everyone.   :D

You do but you need to get the HBC on there before you can do anything. You use the HBC to install everything else.

Oh.  So I need to install the HBC and then I just use it from the console to get the backup launcher?  Sorry if these are stupid questions.  :dunno

This is the guide I used. You will have to research if there could be any problem with any of these steps seeing as how you have a 4.2 system. The HBC and Bootmii were the easiest I think. But installing just those doesn't allow you to play backups. I got nervous at the patching IOS 36 and the preloader install. (I did that because I couldn't load Bootmii as boot2. I didn't install preloader on my brothers because he could install Bootmii as boot2.) Good luck.

In all honesty, I loved the soft mod stuff when it came out so I could use a usb drive, but I'm finding myself just going back to using disks since I have a modchip and I have no problems with games via disk.

I do like some homebrew though like the media players and emulators, but they only require HBC and dvdx and thats easy.

I love having channels for all of my games. I hated using the discs and switching just to play darts and bowling. Now I have a channel for each game and run them one after another. The discs are on the shelf with the other DVD's. :)

Thanks for the link J_K_M_A_N!  I have a couple of days off next week so I'll see if they have any updates there for virgin consoles.  Soon I will have a backup game player or a white brick and a really upset wife.  Ah, such is life.  Thanks again.

I'm sitting at 4.1U and everything I've seen so far suggests that you not upgrade to 4.2 just yet. It still sounds to me that there is no brick protection that's 100 percent secure on that level yet, and 4.2 really gave us nothing.  I'm just saying be careful. Use bootmii as boot2 if you can, and definitely 1) back up your NAND, and 2) NEVER DELETE IOS FILES, ESPECIALLY IOS60!!!!

That said, I modded mine (with fingers crossed) again last night using the Wii Shop and Mii updater file from Wii Brew. It tells you if IOS61 has been updated - mine had, so I skipped that step. Then it asks you if you want to update the Wii Shop channel first, then the Mii Channel.  Wii Shop takes quite a while to fully load the mod, be patient....but no problems with either, and I can finally get to WiiWare again (hello, Lost Winds 2).

The whole point of the second paragraph was to say this: if you don't trust 4.2 yet, there are ways to mod the Wii to include the new versions of channels WITHOUT doing a full system upgrade - and you might want to try that first. Just my two cents based on my readings so far...

I'm avoiding all updates from here on.  I got SDHC support from 4.1, and I don't see any need from here on out.
