So... I finally got a DC
« on: July 16, 2003, 11:13:10 am »
My wife picked me up a Dreamcast for my birthday (what a doll!).  For an ancient discontinued system it IS pretty awesome!  Now I understand the cult following...

I fired it up and played a little bit of crazy taxi 2 and was impressed with the graphic quality (and the soundtrack) and gameplay...

I know I'm coming late to the party on this... but I usually buy behind the curve on games (i.e. wait for the reduced "game of the year edition" PC games and bargain bin stuff)... and I hadn't owned a console since I sold my playstation 1 in college to make rent =(

*shrug*  What's funny though is my wife didn't realize it hooks up to the TV (not that she didn't realize it could)... rather that she assumed it was destined for ubercade (which it might)... so there may be some TV conflicts in the future =P

I'm open to some wife friendly DC game suggestions if you have any?  She seemed to be interested in crazi taxi so that's a good sign...

Welp, I've been converted (maybe I *do* need 8 buttons on my CP - j/k) =P

I think there is a puzzle bobble for the dc.  There are a couple of good tetris games for the DC.  Worms World Party and Worms Armagadon.

Heh that's funny, rampy - I just got one off a friend who was gonna toss it.  Never played it before.

Don't have any recommendations, but I know a few women who like to play DOA2 and make fun of the 'realistic' physics of the female chars :)

Funny that this comes up all of a sudden ... a while back some of you may have noticed my post garding an X-Arcade for Sale or Trade.

Well ... I ended up trading it for a DreamCast system (had never played DC before) and a bunch of games.

I must say I am extremely happy with the way this trade turned out.

And if this helps ... MilitiaWife and I have been playing Virtua Tennis against one another. The only problem is she is upset that Pete Sampras is not on the game.  :P

I've heard great things about a game called Chu Chu Rocket. Supposed to be one of the best rated games made for DC and it can be bought for like $6 or something. Virtua Tennis is another great game. I've heard it's better than Tennis 2K2 (the predecessor), but I've never played that one.

Since you've already got the DC I would recommend getting emulators for NES and SNES. That increases your game library by 1000 fold instantly and free. I've tested both and they both work quite well. Oddly enough, I had trouble with the Genesis emulator... Go figure...

My gf likes Quake 3, though.  ;D She was also kind enough to lend me her MK.

Mwaahaha... I have a Genesis emulator that exists NOWHERE on the net... It plays all games full speed with sound. My friend brought it back from Tokyo....

Chu Chu is a good game (fun Multiplayer)

You can toss

1) Every NES game w/ NesterDC
2) Every SNES game w/ DreamSNES
3) As many HB games as you could have...

w/ a cool menu system all on ONE CD! It is hard to do, but I would say if you read the documentation anyone can do it...

Here are some everyone needs:

Rez [sadly, must be pirated : (  ]
Tokyo Bus Guide Tour (FUNNY)
Q3
UT
The Typing of the Dead
HOTD2
Ikaruga

and oh so many more!

The worms games are TERRIBLE on the dreamcast. Slightly more tolerable if you use a mouse/keyboard. But still... terrible. I agree with virtua tennis. But I'm not kidding... go get her Space Channel 5.

Also militiaman, the dreamcast + games is like the most popular items for off-kilter valued trades :) It's just that way! I traded mine for a 19" Eygo NIB.

There are tons of great console-friendly games for the DC if you go that route.

Hydro Thunder, 4WD Thunder (or whatever it is), are both midway arcade game ports...the Crazy Taxi series.......my wife loves fighting and driving games...(yeah, she scares me too sometimes)....
you pretty much can't go wrong with MOST DC games...they are all fun in one way or another.....not alot of dogs in the group.

DC is probaly the last console that "reminded me of the atari 2600 days".....ie a system that did arcade ports that weren't just fighting games.

The DC to me is the "arcade in a box" that the playstation, or nintendo or all the toehr systems since colecovision just didn't feel like.

Powerstone 2 is also pretty fun for a couple of hours. Better if you have 4 players. Chef's Luv Shack = Almost worse than Worms on DC>.

I didn't read any documentation anywhere cuz I didn't try to combine everything.

I keep my ROMs on a seperate cd. The emulators were already in ISO format when I found them online. Just burned them directly to seperate cd's through Nero. It was an absolute no brainer. The thing worked and started up the first time. Then just pop in the other cd after the emulator loads. TADA!

Maybe some people like having everything on one disk, but I find it better to keep the ROMs on a seperate disk, anyways. You don't have to go through a long image compiling process any time you want to add a ROM. Just burn a new ROM disk. The emulator disk never changes (unless, of course, they update the emulator but I don't see that happenning soon).

I'm not that much of a sports games fan (especially American ones I know little about) but the Sega games are just brilliant. Visual Concepts and Hitmaker did a wonderful job on these games.

Tennis, Football, Hockey, Basketball 2k2 series. Virtua Tennis 2k2 in particular. It's even better than the first game, if thats possible.

Fighter wise there's alot to keep you going. Keep away from VF3tb though. It's a bad port. Better to go for VF4: Evo on the PS2 if you want the best 3d fighter around. The neo geo ones are already in MAME, provided you have a pretty fast machine.

Street Fighter 3: Third Strike, Soul Calibur, Powerstone 1/2, Garou: Mark of Wolves, Last Blade 2, King of the Fighters DM: 1999, Fire Pro D Wrestling (the only good wrestling game I've played in years).

Some people find the sensitivity on Daytona a bit tricky, but its perfect with a wheel. Quite alot faster than the arcade original too.

Daytona USA: 2001, F355 Challenge, Crazy Taxi 1/2, le Mans 24hr, MSR.

And finally you've got some really, really good shooters. I play these games all the time. Bangai-O from Treasure is magnificent; like Robotron on steroids. The storyline is also hilarious.

Ikaruga, Mars Matrix, Gunbird 2, Bangai-O, Border Down, Zero Gunner 2, Cosmic Smash, Rez.

As far as puzzle/thinking games go I'd opt for the DC iterations of Puyo Puyo, Mr. Driller and Columns are all really coo.

You can't go wrong with any of the Naomi ports. They're still being released today. All the more reason to chip your machine and get them from Japan on import.

Another fun game is San Francisco Rush 2049!  This game is a blast, and my kid loves it.

I just bought a DC about 6 months ago.  This console does rock.  Too many good games.  Plus I can't get over the graphics in Soul Calibur.  They look incredible.

Oh yeah, bomberman!

I just had my number 2 cabinet delivered last night ( wait till you see this bad boy, I'll have pics in a couple of weeks ). When I bought it it had a Street Fighter control panel ( loads of buttons, cool ) and when it arrived it had a 4 player Bomberman panel and PCB! And the guy also chucked in the Street Fighter CP as well. He he pity the thing takes up half my garage lol.

Remember, Sonic games only feel like Sonic games on Sega consoles. The Dreamcast being no exception.

But, personally, if I had a Dreamcast, I would put Linux on it...there's a great project on that, search for Dreamcast Linux on Google.

While everything these fellows are saying is absolutely true, the single most lady-friendly game on the entire planet is
Samba De Amigo.

It absolutely must be played with the maracas controller, but I swear to toast, even my grandmother played this game and had a good time. My wife hates games, but loved Samba.

Chu Chu rocket is great, and you might also try Virtua Tennis or Ecco the Dolphin (pretty!). Oh, and Ooga Booga. No, it's not the finger in the butt game. It's an action game in which you choose one of four little witch doctors and throw things at one another. Very fun, and highly underrated.

Actually, come to think of it, it's not entirely unlike Bomberman.

On the other end of the spectrum is Seaman, which my wife literally forbade me from telling any more of her personal information when it asked me how "Kim" was doing while she was in the room. It's a very odd game, but one that I found myself captivated by.

moving beyond the stuff with femal appeal, you've got fantastic shooters and fighters:
Gunbird 2
Mars Matrix
Bangai-O
Giga Wing 1 and 2
King of Fighters Evolution
King of Fighters Dream Match 99
Last Blade 2
Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves (Garou)
Guilty Gear X
Dead or Alive 2
Soul Calibur
Tons of Capcom stuff, both Street Fighter and Marvel-ized.

A couple of awesome imports:
Zero Gunner 2 - a shooter where you can swivel your ship around. Very cool
Vampire Chronicle - a collection of all three Vampire fighters from Capcom. Online in Japan.

One great RPG
Skies of Arcadia (GameCube re-release is better)

And some great, great genre benders:
Space Channel 5 - retro-cool rhythm game that's getting Sega sued. MAY come out for PS2 soon. Maybe.
Tech Romancer - robot fighting
Virtual On Oratorio Tangram - more robot fighting
Jet Grind Radio - (the Xbox sequel is better)
Rez - awesome 3D rail shooter
Cannon Spike - sort of top-down beat 'em-up from Capcom
Sega Bass Fishing and Sega Marine Fishing - one of the best times I've ever had was getting drunk with two buddies, my dad, and my little brother (him=not drunk) and playing these two games. But you NEED the fishing pole controller.
Typing of the Dead - weirdest idea ever that works flawlessly. However, you need the Dreamcast keyboard.

There. That should take care of spending that nest e4gg you were saving for your kid's college tuition.
Like a bird on a wire,
Like a drunk in a midnight choir,
I have tried, in my way,
      To be free.
          - Leonard Cohen

I had been scratching my head about this...
What's the big deal about the Dreamcast??? Uh... Now that I've read through this thread I can't wait to get my hands on one!!! I love shooter games, & I just don't like the current options with mame (act labs goofy looking death ray gun!). I also love driving games, but I've been sketchy as to how I'm going to get a wheel & pedals on an all-in-one type cabinet anyway. But if I get my hands on a DC I'll find a way.

After reading this thread, I bid & won this auction for a dreamcast, 2 controllers, a gun, and 2 games... I can't wait!!! I figure I'll also get this gun for it (hopefully to play 2 player shooting games... (It can do that right??? please say yes...) I plan on hiding this thing in a cabinet w/ mame etc...

I'm starting to get giddy... I'm glad I found this thread...

definatly get 2 guns, 2 player house of the dead is worht it alone but virtua cop 2 is fun, confidential mission is fun also, i have the madkatz guns and one interact starfire, the star fire is more acurate, but i still want to try those bioguns and the minibiogun before im sold on the interact, the autoreload and fire work with house of hte dead, where my madkatz wouldnt, and hte interact is a little heavy.

two guns one player is fun as well 8)

gnat

ps-i been finding dreamcasts at pawnshops for 25$ and they give me a 7day exchange if it doesnt work, i bought a 2nd one just cause they were so cheap 8)

EggZilla: both Space Channel 5 games are already out of PS2. At least in Europe anyway.

Virtual On Oratorio Tangram is something I've been meaning to track down for a long time - its meant to be far better than the newer games Marz and Force. The twin sticks just cost a ---smurfing--- fortune.

I enjoy marvel vs capcom 2 on the dc.  I don't think anyone else has mentioned that.
