I got 2 chipped boxes and there is so much that you can do with them. Microsoft really missed the boat on this one they should have allowed PVR and media center capabilitys like the PSX is going to do.

Yes you can get it to play illegal copies of games but I use mine for playing movies mostly. I archive a lot of TV onto my server and I can use my xbox to play it back. My Replay TV device can only hold 40 hours so I move shows to my server. Once I move them off the ReplayTV I can't play them anymore with it so I have to watch them on a computer or my xbox. With the xbox I have a simple way to get a high quality picture and sound on the tv.

I replaced the hard drive in my xbox. Now when I go up to the cabin on the weekends I FTP a bunch of movies to it and play them with a projector for the whole family. Its a great time!

My other favorite thing is to copy my games to the hard drive so that I can leave the disks at home when I travel. I've just started to get into emulators and am having a good time exploring all the different systems I can play on it.

EDIT-
How does it work and in wich format are the copies burned!?
Back on topic- The chip allows you to load unsigned code. Unsigned code would include homebrewed programs like media players, emulators, ports of old games like quake and duke nukem. Backups of retail games are also unsigned since no one has found a way to hack the digital signature they simply strip off the check for it instead. It also allows you to load several different versions of Linux which will almost give you the functionality of a real PC. Personally I think running linux on an xbox is a waste of time but some people like to do it just because they can.

Xbox DVD's read from the outside in, which is why a standard PC drive can't recognize them. Most xbox's will recognize cdrw's and dvd-r. Some will recognize dvd+r and even fewer will recognize cdr. If you don't have a dvd burner you won't be able to back up most games but you can copy them to the xbox hard drive, at least untill you run out of room. Xboxes have a 10gb hard drive in them. They come formatted to 8gb but accessing that extra 2 gig is really easy.

The first one I did was a X2 pro and the second one was a x2pro v2.1. I tried to do the no solder pogo pin adapter thing but it didn't work for me and it was $30 wasted. I broke the first chip I purchased fussing with it trying to get the pogo pin adapter to work. Then I purchased another chip and tried soldering it to my motherboard. I used to large of a soldering iron and fried the motherboard. The first xbox I chipped turned out to be an expensive experiment. I replaced the mobo in that one and then soldered it successfully with a much smaller soldering iron.

Then chipping the second xbox was a peice of cake. The new chips with the LED's and external on/off switches are great!

I don't know of a dreamcast emulater yet. There is a list of xbox emulated consoles

Most of the newer chips either come with a mod disable switch or you can easily add one. With the mod turned off it boots up normal and M$ can' detect it, so live works just fine.

Why use live anyway? You can play for free on the internet and not pay a monthly fee.

I was reading an article on GameSutra www.gamasutra.com
about how to hack an XBOX with NO chip. Basically, there is a security vulnerability when the system is booting and reading in a font file from the CD. You can feed the XBOX a bad font file, and it leaves the XBOX wide open to loading up any software you want.
No MOD chip involved, and it doesn't void your warrenty.

There are hacks that can be done without chipping your box. The most popular non-invasive one is an exploit where you use James Bond 007 to load a hacked saved game. I'm not sure exactly what this hack allows you to do but I know it at least can get you running some version of Linux.

You can also flash your MS on board bios but this does require at least one soldered connection. I don't know much about that one either.

You can make your own mod chip for under $10. There are people selling those mod chips for $20. I would recomend a good quality popular chip and thats about $35.

http://xbox-scene.com/ is to the xbox world as arcadecontrols.com is to the arcade world. I.E. it is the definative xbox site.

Well the xbox uses 4 gig dvds.  Obviously not all of the games take up that much space but that should give you an idea.

My recomendation is go with a 120gb. You won't regret going big. The xbox will only use 137gb max so using a 180gb is kind of a waste. Also use a 5400rpm drive vs. a 7200 if you have a choice. the 5400 puts out less heat and performance difference between the 2 is negligible. If xbox live is in your future then make sure you get a drive that is lockable. Their is a lot onthat topic over at xbox scene inclluding lists of drives that don't lock and drives that do.

Well the xbox uses 4 gig dvds.  Obviously not all of the games take up that much space but that should give you an idea.
4gb dvd's? Xbox origanels are actually the same as most video DVD's with a maximum capacity of 9 gb. PC DVD writters can only do half have that because they are single layer. Most commercial DVD's are dual layer.

In my experience most games are 1.5-3gb. I've seen games as smalll as 30mb (namco museum) and games as large as 7.5gb (Metal gear solid 2) with every size in between. Any game bigger than 4.3gb can only be played from the hard drive, you can't play it from multiple disks but you can back it up to multiple disks. Some games like halo have a bunch of demo's on the disk. If you dump the demo directory in halo you get a gig back.

If your looking to chip a xbox and add a bigger hard drive check out the tuturials over at xbox-scene. If you can't find the answer there search their message board. Whatever you do don't ask questions about backing up your games. They do not allow it over there. Its like asking here if you can download roms.

Many people chip their boxes to play game backups but you'll be surprised by how much more functional your xbox will be and how many other things you'll do with it.  If only it had video capture it would be a sweet media center PC. Even without video capture it makes a sweet media center to play your media files.
My statements are my own opinions. They have the value that the reader gives them. My opinion of my opinion varies between foolish and brilliant and these opinions often change with new information.

They are only 2 bio's that are considered legal. They are Cromwell Flashbios - All it does is flash over itself with the bios you tell it to (most mod chips come with this loaded on them). Cromwell (original) - All this does is load linux, nothing else.

It gets confusing because there are similar named things that do different things. There is a xecuter chip and their is a  xecuter bios. There is also a similard named dashboard and that is the evolution-x dashboard. People often get confused. To play backups, homebrewed apps, and other unsigned code you need to mod your chip and flash it with a different bios then you can run a different dashboard which is sort of like the OS of the xbox. The xbox unmodified comes with a very limited dashboard. Loading a new dashboard gives you menu's of the things you load onto your xbox.
