Building a lightweight cabinet
« on: October 05, 2009, 05:32:18 pm »
I'm planning to build a tabletop cabinet for a Christmas gift. I got the model done in sketchup and realized that, even at tabletop size, this thing's gonna weigh a lot if I build it out of 3/4" MDF.

I need to build a cabinet that can be lifted onto the kitchen table for gametime, then be put in the corner when not in use. (I know, I know, but not everyone thinks like us.)

I'm only going to put a single four-way joystick and two buttons on it, so it won't be taking the abuse of a Street Fighter type game. I do of course want it sturdy enough to tolerate some 14 year olds playing Pac Man, but I want it to weigh something reasonable.

Any recommendations for what I can build the cabinet out of?

I'm building my tabletop out of 12mm (=1/2 inch) MDF.

Haven't finished yet, but so fare, with added base, backpanel and top, It is very solid

My tabletop was built out of 3/4" for sides...1/2" for back/top etc and it isn't that heavy.   I routinely shlep it around with computer and monitor inside.

You can reduce the weight but increase the cost by using plywood.   Doesn't have the splitting problem of MDF and the dust is much less bothersome.

You could also make wooden frames for the panels, and attach thinner grade plywood/mdf...

I guess even 9mm MDF would suffice. If you glue it well, and insert some stiffening ribs, it will be really sturdy. Don't screw! filling screw holes just kills the nice paintability of MDF.

Yeah, that question was on my radar. I guess I'll go with glue and brads from the air nailer.

Just be sure before gluing...gluing is much stronger and I use it a lot but its irreversible...the only way to get the pieces apart will be with a sledgehammer...I would recommend using screws first until you are absolutely sure of placement and only then glue them.  It is much stronger but also much more permanent ;)

Just take some time for the preparation and solid glue is absolutely no problem. Try a cardboard mock-up if you are unsure.
