Mala startup issues, mame dos window?
« on: October 04, 2009, 05:43:30 pm »
Trying to get my mame cabinet running again after a year or 2 of it being down. Mamewah is totally crashing the computer and seems to have taken a turn for the worse in the past few years. No matter what download I try, it's locking up my system.
So, I'm trying Hyperspin and Mala, whichever one pisses me off least wins.

Current issues:
Mala:
I finally have running, gamelist is loading right, seeing all the roms, etc.. when I choose a game however, it says "starting" then the dos box flashes, and then nothing. I can't see wtf is in the dos box, it flashes far too quickly.

Hyperspin:
Can't get ANY artwork to work besides default, and the gamelist.....function is just about the ugliest process I've ever seen. Also VERY slow and choppy. I'm running this on a P4 3.0, is hyperspin too much for a computer that speed? I CAN get mame to work with hyperspin though, whereas mala just does nothing.

I'd MUCH rather have help with mala at this point. Hyperspin doesn't look fun to customize at all.

Mala has a support forum here; see the link at the top.  Regarding Mala, and nothing but a flashing dos box.  Are you using the command line version of Mame?   Are you able to manually (without Mala) run the same game you had trouble with from a command line in the mame folder with a command such as:

Code: [Select]
mame dkong

If not, reply with the error that mame gives you.  Otherwise something may not be configured correctly from within Mala.  Have you created the mame.xml file and refreshed the main game list in Mala?

Yeah, I'd try running Mame from a dos box manually, just to make sure you can.

Then, check the MALA options to verify the command line options, just in case.

yeah I saw the mala subforum right after posting (of course)
I hadn't tried running it from the dos box because hyperspin was running it fine, but when I DID just try running it from the command line, it gave the same flicker/error that flashed by too fast for me to see. I believe getting that box to stay open is an option in mame but I can't seem to find it anymore, I'm rusty as hell, lol.

Ran Mame32 so I could catch the error, Proposed video mode not supported. Believe everything is set to 800*600, windows xp just set it up that way this time, guess I'll try switching everything to 640*480. could be that hyperspin was overriding all the other settings, and forced 640*480, and that was what allowed it to run properly? that sound feasible?
