What does it take to get these working again?
« on: September 25, 2009, 09:18:17 pm »
Hi:

Can anyone give me a hand in figuring out how to get this coin door to work? I do not know what to do and buy to get this part back to functioning status.

Thanks!
Rich

The coin mechs are missing.  I've got some used plastic quarter mechs for $5.00 each plus shipping if you're interested.

Are you going to refinish that door?

Hi:

I do want to refinish the door (black if I have to paint it myself or perhaps bright white if I can find a cheap powder coater).

I want to install it into a Joust/Defender cab that I bought for $30.00.

I bought the coin door on eBay over 2 years ago but since I cannot find much on how to repair them or to fix them up (suggestions welcome) I just put it into the attic back then.

I would like to get the whole thing working again. Here is what I would really love:
  • Coins being accepted and processing credits
  • Return coin slot working
  • the 25 cent sign lit up
  • Accepting quarters and some kind of Namco coin/token

Mind you that this is going to be my MAME machine. I am using an IPAC keyboard encoder to handle the coins and joysticks.

Any help or ideas is appreciated!

Thanks
Rich

Best suggestion is to do a search here on restorations and projects that have working coin doors.  I don't think there is a specific tutorial anywhere but there is way more than enough info in past threads to do what you want.

That's a Midway door and won't fit on a Joust cab.   Joust and Defender also have two distinctly different cabs, which is it?  Defender had two different coin doors during its run.

Sounds like he has a conversion.  I'd guess that is the door he took off the cab.

Coin door was from eBay a few years ago so it didn't come with the cab.  It probably won't fit on either a Joust or a Defender cab.

Hi:

There was a coin door that came with the $30.00 cab. It was pretty bare bones. I have attached some photos of it.

Thanks

That's the one that goes with a Joust all right.  And it's missing all the hardware.

Your door is missing almost all parts.  You'd be better off getting another complete door.  In the interim you could paint this door all pretty so when you do find another door you can migrate the parts (since you'd have to do it anyway).

I've got a few of these doors in various states of repair.  The intention was always to renovate them and sell them off.  Haven't touched them in years, I think I'm going to do an inventory.

LOL my thoughts exactly! I figured that if it could nto yet work I would at least make it look good.

I am thinking of going with an enamel white rather than the old gloss black.

Hi again:

I am still having a bit of a hard time finding any decent plans for an old 1982 Joust cabinet. I see sometimes people have the exterior dimensions but what I need are the interior dimensions for things like how the monitor/TV was originally mounted. Should I start a new thread for this?

Thanks

Hi:

I do have the cab. I have just attached a few picture for everyone.

As you can see in the pictures there are places where I think there used to be wood moldings that would hold the bezel and monitor in place but they are missing. I am hoping to figure this out with as little experimentation as possible. :) So far this forum has been a great help.

I am not even sure what size monitor-TV to put into this thing. I would love not to spend to much more on it but of course I will if I have to!

Thanks for the feedback.

That's not a Joust ... it's a Robotron.

Not that it helps you, but since I have one of the same era, I can take some measurements for you (even though I swore that I would never do it again, the arcade gods have smiled upon me recently, granted me a grail and I need to keep the balance tipped appropriately).

FWIW, though, it looks like the monitor shelf is intact.

Intact-ish.  It's a plywood board that the monitor bolts to (shelf mount monitor) and slides into place and the shelf is then bolted to the cab.  Unless he pulled it out, it appears to be missing.

But that's not a big deal, it's just a piece of wood.

Also appears to be missing all cab hardware (cp latches, I note) and is there a cp?

Yep, for me, CP would be the big one here and can be found repro'd in metal at ArcadeShop, IIRC.

Hi Again:

I do have the CP and the upper part for the marquee. I took it off to make it a bit easier to work on the cab for now. What is concerning me is how to mount the monitor-TV and the screen bezel. I am going to use this cab as a MAME cab so there seems to be lots of room in the bottom for that.

thanks

wow that cab has seen better days, im glad it found a good home though someone who is willing to nurse it back to health.

as per your coin door you have 2 options.

1. get a new coin door + cash door that originally went on it.

2. replace kick panel (front bottom panel) with a fresh piece of wood and mount any door you want.

3. ADD a new piece of wood over the kick panel leaving the original panel behind it and then add a coin door (coin door would need to be of same or smaller dimensional otherwise you'd be cutting up the original kick panel behind it.

#1 would probably be the easiest way to go about it.. that midway door you have is highly desirable you could probably get someone to swap you for a working door that originally went on that cab.. if not happs sells doors that will fit it.

the original door was a coinco 2802.

the monitor mounts on a piece of wood, then it slides into those other two pieces of wood on each side of the cab..

       Monitor
= ---------------- =

the bezel usually just sits on the monitor and is held in place by the monitor glass/plexi

although sometimes it's stapled in place on it's edges.

I see what you are saying and that is what I suspected. Any idea what size monitor originally went into this cab (Joust - Defender - Robotron whatever...)?

I am hoping to get my cab done in a two week period before my partner gets mad at me for having it laying in the living room.

Thanks

/Most/ classics used a 19" monitor.  Note that this cab uses a "shelf" mount monitor, not a universal mount.

Hey there:

Well that looks great! I still think that at 8 hours a day I can have the cab done in 2 weeks. I'm on vacation.

I am planning to paint the cab white instead of black. I have ordered 40 feet (a little extra) of bably blue t-molding and want to paint the coin door either white or the same blue.

I need a new Marquee image and CP layout sticker. Eventually I will get the coin door working but I had thought that I should just install two buttons in the rear of the cab for credit 1 and 2.

I recently won a auction for a HAPP trackball that is marbled the same color combo I love white and light blue.

On the sides of the cab I will eventually take the time to either airbrush some graphics on or just buy some vynal static decals of Pacman and Ms pacman.

I have not solved the issue with how exactly to mount a TV monitor into the cab. I have an idea of how it works thanks to the description provided by Beretta but I have to actually figure out how to get it done right. I am usually really picky about this type of thing.

The other issue I am thinking of is Audio. I am sure that the basic output from a soundcard will not be enough to power a 5" speaker that will be placed behind the marquee. The hole was already cut for a round 5" speaker so I do not want to alter that on the cab. I might consider adding some to the rear but not altering the cab. Ideas for this audio issue?

I am sure that I will be posting many more times to this forum give how helpful everyone is.

Thanks
Rich

Unless you're going to have only a 1P layout, a trackball isn't a good option on this cab.

I can think of one example where someone did it, but it's /really/ crowded.  Remember this is a cab that was originally intended for one person at a time.  Two player SF2 layout can be done, but it's a tight fit.  Add in a TB and it's even worse.  Plus remember you have to stand next to the person you're playing with/against, literally shoulder to shoulder.

If it were my cab, I wouldn't necessarily do an only Williams game theme, but I'd do only horizontal games that are 2P alternating play.

I see what you mean. I can understand that. I am just such a fan of the old trackball one player games that I wanted to include the option to play them.

you might consider modifying the CP to be easily changeable.. then you could just put the track ball panel on when ever you want to play track ball games..

as for the tv you could either just SIT it on the shelf.. or you coudl bolt it to it's case.. or some people remove them from their housing and build a wooden frame to mount the tube.. and then just mount it's PCB to the shelf.

audio wise you could just get a amp to power the speaker.

someone was just talking about small amp's in the main section they linked to a 20 dollar amp on ebay that would probably work well for you situation.
