Looking for a front end...
« on: September 24, 2009, 11:13:02 pm »
hey guys, i've been using MALA for a long time, and i really like it.  but i'd like to try some others. I was looking around the forums and found AdvanceMenu, which looks pretty cool.  i really like the idea of being able to have little thumbnail views like that where the games are laid out in a grid or something.  the problem is, i can't seem to get advancemenu to run. it tells me there is no video driver is able to program my video board.

sounds like a load of crap to me.  are there any front ends out there that will work like this, preferably one that will actually run?

I bought Maximus Arcade because I liked it so much. Check out Delusional's cab. He is a Maximus Arcade guru.

gameex will do that. you can toggle between a thumbnail view like that, a text list or you can even have the snap change to show on the full background.

my own MultiFE (not have time to work on yet by now) have also grid support, which collect all clones into one "folder". There is also wiki to checkout frontend software as well a sticky thread.
Decade Old Work: MultiFE, ArcadeMusicBox
Today Works: Various Spectrum Next games from Rusty Pixels and html5 games.

i'll have to look at gameex again

ok, i gave gemeex another shot, but i didn't get very far.  I always brushed it off because it looked too much like a windows app, which apparently can be changed.  however i can't even get it to run because it tells me my rom path is incorrect for mame, even though it is set properly.

the problem i seem to have is that alot of the programs that people use in this hobby are just so poorly documented.  I've downloaded so many different apps, from front ends, to programs to convert mng caputres to avi, to some program (i forget the name) that was used to convert rom sets from one version to the other.  half of the stuff i get does not come with any clear instructions at all.  I understand alot of these apps were written by some guy trying only to resolve his own problems, and therefore he understands their inner workings.

it is just very frustrated that so many of these programs either dont work, or require you to search through numerous web sites with dead links in order to try to find some way to make them work.

i dont know why gameex says that my rom path is wrong, when it clearly isnt.  but i dont have that problem with mala, so i'll just stick with it, since it actually works

Hi, That's why GameEx (and others) have a dedicated support forum. GameEx is at http://www.gameex.info. Its the age old issue of telling the problem to the right person :)

Im not sure why its not working, its not a bug, and if you simply post the log, youd get it fixed in seconds most likely. Ill help you right now. Its the same sort of scenario for all the popular front ends. There all very actively supported.

Is it set to a network path?
