MAMEWAH - Possible feature addition?
« on: July 15, 2003, 09:12:09 am »
Was just thinking the other day...would it be possible to run mamewah with a switch that allows you to start automatically with a different emulator selected?

Was just considering a web front end to my cabinet that allows you to pick anything from web browsing capabilities to jumping right to a mamewah emulator list (rather than starting it and then having to scroll to a different emulator)

Just a thought...not a bigge ;D

Or if you get really bored, how about a .lay file per emulator that changes when you switch emulators, it would be nice to have different skins for different emulators :)

It could be your lucky day...

I got a mail earlier requesting this for the second time.  I replied that I would not be doing this for a good while...I guess I must have got bored because I have now done the majority of it!  :D

Cool. Good on you Minwah.

I was thinking to myself the other day, that a "skin per emu" would be a cool idea !

Cheers

Well I knew it was coming - it looks a bit crap with loads of artwork boxes filled with 'no snap' images for the consoles...

The emulator specific layouts should make for some pretty interesting skins!

Minwah, I was wondering if you had ever considered having any transition effects occur when changing between Emulators??  Maybe the ability to slide graphics into the page?  I don't know how hard this would be, but it would look pretty cool!

Well, no, I hadn't thought of it  :D  But I suspect it would be difficult if not impossible to do well, using Visual Basic without DirectX as I currently do.  I envisage flickering etc. would be a problem :(

You are correct sir, I tried doing it about a year ago in laz's early stages.  Needless to say you can load the new skin pretty fast, but the flickering is enough to give you an epeliptic fit.  I can do it in dk, but it doesn't load fast enough due to dx's slow texture loading. Ugh, guess it's probably not gonna happen.

Another small thing i'd like to see in Mamewah is the addition of an "emergency exit" key combination or something along those lines. The reason this would be useful, is that MAMEWAH has frozen quite a number of times on me (only whilst setting up roms and emulators, not really when the cab is complete) and I am unable to multitask out of it to close the window.... yet windows is still running in the background. I found this wasn't a problem at all with XP, as I could control alt delete and close mamewah, but now that i've downgraded to 98SE, I have to restart each time.

For example, if you push Alt + Q (doesn't really have to be cab friendly, as if it's this situation you may as well pull out a keyboard anyway) it would do a emergency exit of mamewah.

Nothing serious, just a small little addition that would make setting up the software easier.

maybe just then a transition of the background. (I could add support for transitions between skins etc. very easily because transitions are build into director natively...)

Make sure you turn the 'Misc Options' > 'Windows Task Switching' to 'On'.  This feature is broken in 2k/XP, which is why you were able to Alt+Tab out.  The feature works in '98, thus you cannot Alt+Tab!
