mamewah wont exit to windows, help!
« on: July 14, 2003, 10:54:05 pm »
i can access the options screen (im using win98 SE by the way) and pushing "1" and "2" work for everything like running games and exiting games by pushing ESC and all that, but when i try to exit, i can get to the part where you choose Exit to Windows, Exit and Reboot, etc. but when i push "1" nothing happens!!!  why is it working for everything else and not this.

oh and by the way, im using mame32 and NO im not switching to mame command line even though "its sooo much cooler" ;D

I'm sure that's a great nuisance for a home computer, but if this is going into an arcade machine does it really matter if it canb exit or not?

On another note, what version of Windows do you use?

Shut off the mamewah sounds (ie. do not configure any sound) and try again.

Very true. Now that I think about it, I had some odd problems with sounds enabled on my less-than-glamorous PC.

You need to install MAMEWAH, you can't just drag it over from another PC.

FWIW I was never able to reproduce this sound / not being able exit bug.  I can't figure what would cause the problem really.

hulkster: what sounds were you using, and which did you turn off in order to get it to work?

Nah, I did the same thing myself.

Been there, done that.  Make sure you actually install from the setup program.  Then copy all the updated .exe files and such to bring you to the latest version.  And last would be to go in the Files directory and delete the mamewah.cfg file.

I had an issue where the "1" button wouldn't execute anything (including menu options).  I deleted the mamewah.cfg and everything was fine after that.  Just had to reset my layout file.

Hope that helps.

Minwah, when I had this problem it was with Win98SE which is what Hulkster is using.  It seems to me I upgraded Windows Media Player or something and it fixed.... or maybe I used a *.wav instead of an mp3?  It was the exit sound that was the biggest problem I think.  Since then I have upgraded to Win2K then to WinXP so its hard to remember how every little glitch was resolved.

Thanks BuZz.  I do recall you telling me about this, but I never managed to really find out of what was happening.

But you have brought up something I hadn't thought of - MP3's or WAV's.  I have *never* tested this with MP3's, so perhaps that is a factor.  In theory MP3's should work fine, but perhaps pre-Win2k it has issues ?

Did you use MP3's Hulkster?

Edit:  Actually, I have only used WAV's for this...I suppose MIDI files could also be used.  Let me know which type you were using...

no i used wav's.  and my arcade computer is a win98 SE machine, so that might have something to do with it.  see on the computer im at right now, its win2k,and i used mamewah and all that with absolutely no problem.  i put in sounds, all the screenshots worked, everything, but when i transferred the files over, it stopped working right.  im exiting fine now, but the screenshots still dont work.  im in the process of copying my roms and screenshots folder to another folder on the 98 machines hard drive and re-unzipping the the mamewah and mame32 files in another folder and see if it solves my screenshot problem.  cuz right now, i dont even get the default screenshot (mamewah) at the side.  weird.

Rom vs. Listinfo and all that.  i can get all my games to show up in mame32 but its not working in mamewah.  whats the deal.

It happenned with me using the default MAMEWah sound files. It also managed to slow everything down something terrible. Didn't like running a command and playing a sound at the same time. This was in Win98. Haven't tried it yet with WinXP in my newer machine.

yeah i have the newest version of mamewah running.  i think all this messing up might have something to do with the fact that its transferred from another computer.  the only thing i really dont want to have to do over again is getting all 600+ roms and snapshots.  that took me forever.  but i can do the custom list and all that over again.  i guess the best way to go about all this is just to download the emu's and FE's and just start from scratch, then maybe it will work.

I would suggest uninstall MAMEWAH and delete the folder if it still exists.  Then re-install v0.95b and overwrite it with the v0.952b update.

MAME should be OK as long as you check the paths etc. are correct.

BTW if you can wait a day or so MAMEWAH v0.9whateveridecide will have a new installer...

well, before you do that work here's my 2 cents.  This is similar to what you said but just in case.  What I did was install MAMEWAH on my new Machine using its install program.  Then I copied my entire MAMEWAH directory from the old machine to the new one allowing it to overwrite everything.  When I was done I had a fully functioning MAMEAH92B with all my custom lists and cfgs and sounds working just fine.  I did not have to re-setup anything all the install process is doing for you is re-registering a certain DLL (perhaps others) so your snapshots show up.  The actual files installed in the MAMEWAH directory can be over-written without concern - the worst that can happen i guess is you will have to rebuild everything but you said you are prepared to do that anyway.

okay i might try copying my other folders over.  so you just installed mamewah, then copied everything over to that folder?  is that all?

edit:  now that i think about it, i tried doing all that earlier, or at least something similar, and thats when i got that error (see above)

Yes BuZz is correct, the installer is only really required to install the PaintX.dll file (which is required to display PNG's etc.)

Note that the next versions installer will be required for more than just this, and the CFG files will differ, and also there will be a new layout file structure, so I will heartily recommend a fresh install for that version...
