How do I get rid of the annoying "click"?
« on: September 19, 2009, 11:45:49 pm »
The annoying click I am refering to is the one that IE insists on playing everytime someone clicks a link, or the web page auto-reloads. I have turned off all system sounds, and have not found an option in IE for this. The big issue for me is that my livingroom entertainment computer also sports a MagicJack, and when the MJ window is open (even in the background) it occassionally loads a new ad which uses an embedded IE window. This is annoying when I am trying to watch a movie, and I can "solve" it by making sure the MJ window is minimized, but it only stays that way until I pick up the phone.
A regestry edit maybe? Or maybe an option I missed?

Microsoft is annoying as hell when it comes to system sounds. They're still rather inconsistent with where to manage all their sounds and how.

I don't have the IE click (just opened IE7 and tried it). So I'll give you what I did. You don't mention what OS or IE version you have. Create a silent WAV file. A WAV file of SILENCE. Doesn't have to be long, less than 1 sec should do the trick. Then assign it to the Default Beep event. Make sure all your other sounds are empty, void, null. Whatever. Works for me on every sound except for the damn search dog in XP.

Sounds were cool when the PC asks me what I'm doing. But that's so 1990's. Silence is golden and complete 100% customization should rule the day.

Use Firefox.

Its more secure.  Its updated more frequently.

Its completely user configurable (Right click on button area to get options.. then
drag and drop icons at will)

Get great add-0ns like "Tiny Menu".

The Bookmark toolbar is da bomb.   Drag any site link onto it.  Right click on them
to delete them, and or rename them without a name, so you can fit a ton of
links on the bar.

It's TinyXP with whatever version of IE it comes with. I have disabled "all sounds" and it still does the "click"

@ Tigger; you missed the point. I use Firefox for my browser, but MagicJack uses an embedded IE window in its main window. I imagine it uses Java script or ActiveX to change the ad it shows via the embedded browser pane, and each time it changes it produces a "click" sound.
I just need a way to make IE not make that "click" sound.

If you want to disable the click sound in Internet Explorer found in Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows 2000, then follow these steps:

   1. Open the Start Menu / Settings / Control Panel.
   2. Double click on the "Sounds and Multimedia" control panel.
   3. Choose the "Sounds: tab, scroll down in the "Sound Events" window until you reach "Windows Explorer" and under this you will find "Start Navigation".
   4. Click on "Start Navigation" and you will see a .wav file appear in the "Name:" box. This is the sound that is associated with the click sound.
   5. In the "Name:" drop down menu, select (None) and then hit "OK". This will set no sound to be played when you're navigating on the web.

If you want to disable the click sound in Internet Explorer found in Microsoft Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 or Windows Vista, then follow these steps:

   1. Open the Start Menu / Settings / Control Panel
   2. Double click on the "Sounds" control panel. In this control panel, Scroll down in the events window until you reach "Windows Explorer" and under this you will find "Start Navigation".
   3. Click on "Start Navigation" and you will see a .wav file appear in the "Name:" box. This is the sound that is associated with the click sound.
   4. In the "Name:" drop down menu, select (None) and then hit "OK". This will set no sound to be played when you're navigating on the web.
Man, will my cab EVER be finished?

I "mistakenly" figured that selecting "no sounds" would provide "no sounds" from the OS. Apparently, "no sounds" means that it just turns off the "ta da!" and a few other sounds. Go figure...

Also, I would not normally equate windows explorer options with internet explorer options, even tho they share the same code base and I should know better. so :P to you!

EDIT: I also find it hard to imagine that this thread hasn't turned into a "Magic Jack" flame thread yet... I could see "Tigger" screaming about how Magic Jack changed his life, while ummon is screaming that Magic Jack is the biggest pile of processed donkey food ever imagined...
