Dismember the Alamo -PC kiosk shaped like an arcade machine.
« on: September 11, 2009, 10:23:24 am »
This project isn't a full one MAME or arcade cabinet. But rather a walk-up kiosk style game machine that will be used for just three days.

What I am doing is making a custom Left4Dead map based on the Alamo Drafthouse. Simply the best theater in the nation. As part of a zombie movie festival they are having at halloween I am going to be setting up four PCs for people to walk up and play the custom map during the festival.

The design is meant to be as low-cost as possible, able to be built-on site and disassembled for transport. Input is just a keyboard and mouse as custom controls on the PC version of the game are simply not practical. (Plus the expense)

The cabinet is mostly 3/4" MDF with a internal 2x4 structure. Each 2x4 will have threaded inserts to accept 1/4" threaded bolts for assembly. The MDF will be painted black and each of the sides will be wrapped in printed vinyl.

The marque and bezel are yet to be designed.

/Edit: update with infected on the right hand side

If you are interested in the custom map see the project log here:

Nice work. That's very cool you can use sketchup to do maps now.

I used to do maps for Duke3d and doom, but when Quake came around, it got imminently more difficult.

What you've done is very nice indeed. Plus, you have the added benefit of being able to upload the map of the Alamo to Google earth for real 3d views.

Good stuff

And the cabs are a great idea.

This had better be at the South Lamar, or I'll be  :censored: They already have the working DK, and the (possibly working) Ninja Gaiden, SFII, TMNT, and I think an MKII or III.

This is the Lake Creek location. (Cedar Park)
This won't be a permanent feature, it is for their Dismember the Dead zombie film festival on Oct 29th -31st. I forgot that the S. Lamar one had arcade machines, I had in my mind that none of them had any arcade machines.

Also, we are looking for businesses willing to sponsor the costs of these machines.  Currently I am the only one doing most of this project and I can't afford to do this personally. Each machine costs $200 in materials, and vinyl printing is estimated to cost just under $200 per panel.
(If this is against forum rules I can remove this part of the post.)

Damn, I'd offer to help, but I'm faaaaar south of that. That Drafthouse is nice and spiffy inside, you gonna move all the leather sofas out to make room in the center?

As far as sponsors, I'd try Discount Electronics for the PCs, and maybe Arcade UFO, but these aren't really arcade cabs so that's probably not the best idea. There's, of course, always that jovial fat man of Austin cinema Harry Knowles. No doubt he'll be at the film fest, so maybe AICN would throw in a little sponsorship.

How did you approach the theater about this? Are they not supplying you with any money for the project?

Intel is loaning us the PCs, all we need help on is the materials and vinyl.

How I came to start this project was the drafthouse put a call out for short zombie films as part of a contest with a $300 cash prize. My first though was to make a machinima using L4D graphics, but a playable version of the theater in survivor mode came to mind. Since each game is only a few minutes long it made sense for arcade play. The drafthouse is also trying to come up with a sponsor.
