Xbox to arcade monitor adapter?
« on: September 04, 2009, 07:52:15 am »
Hi, can someone help me make a cable to connect my xbox to my arcade monitor. I used this pinouts found here http://www.gamesx.com/avpinouts/xbox.htm but it did not work. I get no display at all. I did add a Video Amplifier found here http://ultimarc.com/vidamp.html and also supplied it with the needed 5v, but no luck. Any ideas, does this not work with all xbox versions?

The XBox normally puts out YPbBr component video.  You can patch the bios or use something to patch the kernel at runtime to make it output RGB video instead.  So with JUST the cable, your Xbox is putputting YPbBr still.  However the Xbox itself can not put out RGBHV which is the normal input for VGA monitors.  The Xbox's TV out chip can be forced to RGB mode but it is hardware limited to sending out signals down only four of it's pins.  RGBHV requires 5 pins.  When modded for RGB output, the Xbox can output RGsB or 'Sync On Green'.  Some monitors support Sync On Green, the Dell P1110's I have on my desk right infront of me do.  You would need to add extra circutry to the cable to seperate the sync signal from the green line and then send it out as seperate H and V signals to get proper RGBHV output.

       Sounds like your talking about VGA mode not RGB. Xbox can output RGB SCART and has composite video that you can pull out composite sync from. The diagram below shows what progress i have made so far. Its close but something is not right. The good news is I have a good clear sharp picture on my arcade monitor. The bad news is its only RED & BLUE, i have no green output at all. I am completely lost to why this is. I have troubleshooted everything i could think of... triple check connections, soldered directly to xbox board instead of A/V cable, tested on 2 xbox's and 2 different arcade monitors, I even read somewhere that SCART only works on PAL xbox's so i used "enigma's video changer" to switch my xbox to PAL mode, but no change at all still no GREEN. I feel that im really close, but their must be something stupid im missing. I would really appreciate any kind of help before i pull all my hair out. Thanks!

Are stock SCART RGB singals even compatable with arcade monitors?  I thought arcade monitors took RGBHV.

Older monitor did, newer monitors with Jamma in mind have composite sync.

I'm pretty sure that most arcade monitors are RGBHV and SCART is RGBS. o.o;;;

Jamma standard is negative composite sync, so if your monitor has H/V sync then you can jump it and it would work. SCART is RGB composite sync. Anyways SYNC is not the issue here, no GREEN is the problem. I have done this same mod with my Dreamcast and had no problems. Just cant imagine why this is.

Call me crazy, but i seem to recall xboxes using a "Sync on Green" connection. The details are hazy, it's been a few years since i've done any xbox modding, but there was a circuit designed using an LM1881N IC, maybe that's what you're looking for?

Edit: Skimmed the thread too fast without reading thoroughly enough. Are you using the LM1881N circuit posted above currently?

Edit 2: Check with this link for a working SOG splitter circuit. http://www.xbox-linux.org/wiki/Xbox_VGA_HOWTO#Using_a_sync_splitter

Edit 3: Should the LM1881N Pin2 be coming from AVIP pin 23 or 22 (green signal)?

 :censored: I feel stupid, the problem was my fault the whole time. So the diagram i posted above is 100% working. I just wasted a week troubleshooting this :banghead:. Now back to some real work.

So what was the problem? Bad soldering?

So what was the problem? Bad soldering?

Well i had several problems working against me. First problem was, one monitor has composite sync the other H/V sync. The other problem is one needed a video amp and the other did not. I was not aware of this at first, so after some frustration i figured it out and i just stayed with doing all the troubleshooting with a spare monitor i have laying around that i use to test arcade PCBs. Now im not sure what dark forces were working on this monitor, but somehow the the pot that controls the green developed some corrosion or moved just right to were it lost contact and was causing my no green situation. As soon as i touched it green came right on. I did not think of checking this to begin with, because i just used this monitor not to long ago and it was fine. So basically the most common thing to check for was my problem and i failed to do so. I feel pretty stupid to think i have years of experience and i let this simple thing slip by me. :banghead:
