I am working on completing "marquees"
« on: July 13, 2003, 02:28:57 am »
Ok, I finally downloaded a cool mamewah skin (the rolling thunder one). I changed it to have a marquee in the upper window instead of a system name.

Anyway. I was immediately annoyed by the fact that a TON of Mame games are missing marquees.

So, I am working on completing the marquees myself. I am checking ebay and klov first to see if I can get a real marquee image, the next source is the original flyer, to see if I can get a suitable image, and finally if need be I will make a marquee from a screenshot.

So a lot of the marquees I am making are technically incorrect, but they look good, and are better than nothing. I am working forwards and backwards through the alphabet, and so far I have # - L and N - Z complete ("S" was a pain in the butt!).

When I am finished I will try to make them available somehow.

UPDATE!

Yay, over 80 percent finished! Only 'M' left to go (plus the Neo Geo inserts inside the Neo One slot marquee).

I might have a  go at finding more control panels, I've made a skin that shows these art files but there seems to be less than half available, perhaps i could find a really cool "nosnap" image for the control panel.

Anyway good luck with the marquees  ;)

Thanks.  If its not too much trouble, it would be great to have you email it to me.  If not, I can wait until Monday.
Thanks.

It looks like I am also going to redo all the Neo Geo marquees, those mini marquees are the wrong size, and stretch out terribly.

Oh, and I AM NOT doing any Mahjong/Quiz marquees. I moved those games out of my roms folder a long time ago.

As for your control panels. Maybe the best thing to do would be to duplicate the panel on your machine for the "no snap" one. Or to get about a dozen different generic ones and alternate between them for games you can't find panel images for.

I agree about them needing redone, but if the fe you use is coded properly they shouldn't be stretched, rather they should be scaled.  :)

I have a blank neogeo "now featuring" marquee you could use to place the inserts on.  I suggest this because a good portion of the neoeo games don't have full size marquees.

Well, the marquee space I am using in my front end isn't large enough to display any detail on the mini marquees if they are scaled. I was thinking about just making new marquees for them all using the logos from the instruction cards/mini marquees (the scans online are pretty high resolution), or the graphics from the flyers.

But first I am going to finish up the missing marquees before I start messing with the Neo Geo ones.

I like the idea of using the full Neo Geo marquee with just the small game inserts. Sounds more realistic than using the flyers or something. After all, that's what the marquees really looked like. Maybe they weren't easy to see, but then they weren't easy to see in the arcades anyways.

See that's what I'm talkin bout Willis.  I realized this fact and put a special info screen in my fe so you can show images in all their full screen glory, if you feel the need to know what they look like.  In all honesty neogeo inserts were rather bland to begin with, just like the dull orange cabs they were played in.  But that's part of the experience, so we should just go with it instead of saying "that's too small, I'll make my own".

Ok. I thought I might test out Howards idea.

I did a Money Puzzle Exchanger Mini marquee inside a 1 slot marquee (with a slightly enlarged mini marquee slot).

Here is how it looks in the front end.

i'v got 1242 marquees that might differ from what you have.

if you want i have no problem sending them to you oliver incase theres some that
may help you. other ppl please dont request me to send them unless you can honestly
host the file, but its 120megs so i dunno how you'd manange that unless you broke it
down into 6 parts or something.

i also have alot of snaps around 2500 and cab shots around 950 if that helps oliver.

I already have 1997 marquees. I may post a "most wanted" list later (after I have at least "something" for each game), to help improve the worst ones.

And I guess I will redo the neo geo ones inside the Neo One slot marquee.

Most wanted list (flyer, marquee, anything I can use to make a decent marquee, the marquees I have made for these games really suck). Most of these either don't have a decent title screen, won't load on my system (some Namco titles), and/or I can't find any decent graphics for them.

Pac & Pal
Wall Street
Ben Bero Beh
Blast Off
The Bounty
Boxy Boy
Bradley Trainer (I have an original marquee, but it is very low res)
Buck Rogers (have poor original)
Burning Force
Tornado
Treasure Island
Cavelon
Checkman
Combat School (I have a purplish monochromish one)
Commando (Sega), the commonly distributed one is incorrect (actually a bootleg Capcom Commando one).
Continental Circus (mine is really low res)
Cosmo Gang (both titles).
Crush Roller
Cutie Q
Cybattler
Qwak (I am currently using a graphic from the flyer from the 1974 version of Qwak).
Razmatazz
Red Robin
Riot City
River Patrol
Rompers
Satan of Saturn
Scrambled Egg
Shadow Land
Sinbad Mystery
Sky Bumper
SOS
Space Force
Speak & Rescue
Speed Coin
Super Bond
Super Bug (have really low res original)
Super Casino
Super Duper Casino
Super Ten
Tactician
Techmo Bowl (have original, but it is at an angle, need one regular).
Toggle
Toryumon
Ultimate Tennis
Van Van Car
Vs. Gong Fight
Vs. Battle City
Vs. Ninja somethingorother
Wanted
Warrior (I have a great one that is totally wrong, someone must have a good shot of an original).
Water Match (have low res).
Water Ski
Wonderboy in Monster Land
Yamato
Zing Zing Zip
Navalone
pisces
Power Surge
Sailor Moon (I am using a pretty good one made from the title screen, but there has to be something better out there).
Orbitron
Ozma Wars
Diamond Run
Defend the Terra Attack on Red Ufo
Dog Fight (1983 version, using marquee to old 70s monochrome version)
Dirt Fox (another Namco game that crashes out on me).
Heavyweight Champ (have super low res original)

I will be adding to this list as I do more marquees. If you feel like being artistic and doing a marquee for one of these titles, then please make the finished product 425 pixels wide (which is the size I have been making all the new ones).

Ok. My first pass is completed. 2024 total marquees.

I am now going over them again to rework the Neo Geo games into one slot marquees, and to touch up/fix up/catch a few games I missed somehow.

2078 Marquees so far. Haven't done many lately, been concentrating on other things.

I too wanted to know if the marquees were available for download.
I also wanted to say thanks to paigeoliver who had a great idea with adding and cleaning up these marquees.  I'm sure it's a lot of work.
Its frustrating seeing some of these games with no marquees.
Please let us know if you have made your marquees  available for download.
Thanks,

havent touched mine in a few weeks, and i got a lot of flack over using other's material (which I do plan on completely customizing to my own material...so dont worry).

I got the marquee thing working easy, so everything changes as you scroll down (ive found tons of marquees on the internet).  I've also incorporated the bezels, and setup the layout properly so everything appears right.  I had to custom do every bezel so it would appear correct (not too hard).  If there is not a bezel for a game it shows a generic MAME bezel.  If its ok ill post the layout and files i have.

Ok, to all those who want them. Someone needs to provide an FTP for me to upload them to, and they have to host them until they get spread around sufficiently.

My server space is borrowed, and I simply don't have that kind of bandwidth available.

Can you reduce the size of the file by eliminating the 1300 available marquees and including the 700 or 800 that are new?

I could do that, if I had thought of that to begin with. But now they are all mixed up. With the ones that everyone else has.

I will have to make some zips to see exactly how large they are. But it easily over 100 MB.

You could use the marquees dat file and either CMP or Romcenter to sort yours out from the rest. ;)

DIRECT DOWNLOADING IS SLOW AND DOESNT WORK WELL.  i'M TELLING YOU P2P SHARING IS THE WAY TO SPREAD THIS.  BIT TORRENT WOULD BE PERFECT TO DISTRIBUTE THIS

Have you thought of simply donating the marquees to the guy that does the offical packs now?  As long as they aren't fakes he'll gladly accept them.

A lot of mine ARE fakes. That is why I want to keep them out of the "official" distributions.

Fakes or not.  We would love to have the marquees...
A correct me if I'm wrong, but the fakes are only for the ones that aren't available or really bad... right?
And, for me and many others, it would be nice to have the whole 100meg+ file.  I have a lot of marquees... but, it no where near the number that you have...
I'm going to have to see if I can find a host site for this file...
Anyone else???

Well see that's you, many of use use artwork for documentation purposes, which makes fakes unacceptable.  Not that it isn't a good project, there's just no way it'll ever get into the official packs.

The majority of the fakes were created from the flyer. Most of the other fakes use a reworked title screen. A few of the fakes are real marquees/graphics from other games (console, electromechanical, etc) with the same title. A scant few were created completely in photoshop, and those are all very simple, just a title, usually in the Atari font.

I have 50 mb of space w/ unlimited bandwidth, however, I am using most it right now.  If I took everything down, which I would be willing to do, I could host the marquees in installments and have each installment up for a week or two.

Another idea for getting these things out would be to put them on a newsgroup.

alt.binaries.mame would be good!

please put a torrent up. I'd have no problem keeping it up for a day or two, and I'm sure most of the others wouldn't either. Once a bunch of people have it, it will be much more accesible.

Fakes aren't horribly bad from an FE perspective as it is better than nothing. Better though to label them fake-gamename.png or something and change the FE to look for the real marquee then if it doesn't exist pull in the fake. Keep you from doing alot of digging to get rid of fake marquess when the real ones become available. Someone would probably distribute it as the Fake Marquee completion pack or something.

Are the Neo Geo Mini-Marquees placed in the one-slot generic Neo Geo marquee available anywhere?  I would love to have these so that they fit (stretch) well when used with MAMEwah.  Anyone have these?  Would love to download a complete set of them.
Thanks.

A few of the Neo Geo marquees made it into one slot marquees. Most have not yet, one of the reasons I wasn't ready to "release" the fake marquee pack yet.

I can host the file, at least until we get an idea of how much *simultaneous* bandwidth usage we are talking about.  If it overloads my bonded T1's, I'll have to shuffle some stuff around and/or remove it... but if simultaneous transfers do not put too much stress on my frame connection, there should be no problem.

In fact, if you can split these up into 3 or 4 files that people can download individually at a time, it may ease the stress and not cause any problems.

You can PM me if you want more information on where you can upload it (and I'll get your account created).

Super cool project to tackle.
I'd also be interested in getting your complete set of images.

Question................do you still need a default image for "no snap found?"
If so let me know, perhaps  I can do something for you.

It was pretty complete back in 2003 when I was working on it. I imagine they have added a few games since then.
