Yet another cab . . .
« on: July 12, 2003, 05:49:51 pm »
Attached are pics of my scratch built cab, modelled after the ultimate arcade.  Thanks to everyone on this board for making it possible!

Has a D9200 that I am still tweaking, getting some out of range errors. Have an older Geforce 2 mx, may I will try the ArcadeVGA.  Also just trying out the frontends.  Been so busy playing with the hardware haven't learned much about the software!

The cp is a bit of everthing, was not up to rotating cp for first try, and thought swapping out panels would take too much time.  This is third cp, built 2 betas to try out the configutation.  Using 360's for player 1 & 2, a 4 way, and a raider pro blue on a happs competition.  Not happy with the competition after being able to directly compare with the 360's.

os, please don't ask how hard it is to play Golden Tee Golf, I'd never *heard* of that game before cruising these boards, so not a high priority for me!  :)

To do:
maybe switch competition for another 360 or analog stick, may also add the new blue Tron replica handles

finish lighting

add some steering wheels I'm working on

far future -- thinking about a sit down driving/flight sim cab, and maybe, a vertical only cab with rotating cp, don't think anyone's tried that yet???

Thanks,

bdsjake

and one of the back. The sound card is mounted behind this panel, and a dowel rod extends the volume knob.

cheap and not fancy, but effective.

Are those joysticks translucent green?  That looks really sweet.  It kinda reminds me of those "day long suckers" that you could get at the gas station...they lasted more like an hour than a day.  AAAAAnyways.  It's looking good, you seem to have captured the furniture look that a lot of people go for when putting them in their living rooms.  Keep up the good work.  And if you get a chance, try out Golden Tee, it's a pretty fun game.
Game programmers do not play games for a living.  Would you say a mechanic drives cars for a living?

the balltops come in several colors, here's his webpage:

http://members.aol.com/n2new/specialtyplastics.htm

sometimes he has some on ebay.  They were $25 for the pair.

Snaaake, the molding is 3/4" pine stain grade from Lowe's.  The plywood is oak, but they didn't carry this stuff (called screen bead) in oak (at least at this store) so went with pine, but turned out okay after I stained it.

also, I appreciate the comments, but, there's no *extreme* closeup pics as because then you would see all the mearsurement errors!  ;)

....also just had a few friends over...someone asked if I had Golden Tee!!!!  maybe have to rethink that after all, get the pc version at least.

I did notice that a *lot* of trackball games are great fun for 3-4 people, shuzz, shuffleboard etc.  They got a lot of attention b/c so many can play.

sigh...I might have to move that raider pro stick somehow after all...

Heh - I've found that people always ask to play the one game you either don't have or is not working.   Law of the party.

That cab looks great - very nice! The natural finish would fit in just about any decor in your house I bet.  The only downside to the 'standard black' finish is that it can be a little obstrusive in the living room.

ok, i have a stupid question. prolly has an easy answer, but i cannot figure it out. remember, all my cabs have been done with vinyl or laminate...

if u are not covering the cab, how do you hide the screws used to put the cab together? ???

i feel stupid, but have no clue...

jakejake, there are no screws showing as everything is connected in the inside by 1x1's (actually, 3/4 x 3/4 molding I found at Lowes' which is about what a 1x1 would be).  Don't have a pic handy but I got the idea from  several others, I think 1Up's pacmamea website has some good pics showing this construction method.

Or other people countersink all the screws and fill the holes with wood filler. :)

Or, like most old-school pieces of furniture, there could be no screws at all - maybe just dowels and glue.  That's usually much stronger than screws and wood, too.

So, how hard is it to play golden tee golf???  hehe
Just because you heard it here doesn't mean you won't play it.  Plus you don't do shuffleboard, horseshoes, or bowling tball games either :)  I hear Do Don Pachi here.

It's a work of ART!!!!   :D

Actually, I owe you a thanks. Your cab is very nice looking. I was worried, as I was basing my new cabinet off www.ultramame.com
I wasn't sure if natural wood would look well or not, as I've seen a few that didn't turn out as well.  Your cabinet proves to me that it is all how you treat the wood/design.

I think I will be adding T-Molding to mine, just to accentuate (sp?) the edges. But still, thank you.

P.S. This is my first post after months of trolling!

Bdsjake, congrats!!!

Very well built cab.  I love everything.

Add Golden Tee, even if you dont have the perfect setup...a little golden tee is better than none at all.

Thanks for the nice comments everyone!  Stay tuned...I have some ideas for a new control panel top...if I have the energy to do it!  After playing on it a while (even older version of Golden Tee and other trackball games) I think I can add an extra 1" around the TB, which should do a lot for elminating hitting the 4-way.  I think I can move the 2p joy to the left an inch and move the flight stick to the right a about 3 inches.  This will be a bit wider than I would like my DOT configuation, but not uncomforatable.  Since your hand on the flight stick sits about 1.5" above the control panel, it will just clear the 2p joystick (I hope!--this type of panel is all about compromise anway, can play about anything but nothing perfect).  I've also decided to get a better base for the flight stick and maybe some of the tron replica handles, it just doesn't seem "substantial" and I'm afraid to really haul it around when playing.  Last, have an idea for attaching wheels and pedals, stay tuned!

Nice Cab,

Since you based your cab on the ultimate arcade I was just wondering why you went for a square control panel as a opposed to a angled cp?

I do have to say that the ultimate arcade is what I am also using as a base for my cab as I really liked the Oak look and the layout of the cp.

GHoward, I think there are a couple cabs out there that go by the name of ultimate arcade.  Here's a link to the one I am referring to:

http://netbox.home.mindspring.com/arcade/

hyui:  I used wood screws from underneath the control panel.  Howver, the ultimarc j-stick has only a thin plate to mount with, and I routered out, so I had to use fairly short screws. I am thinking I will use carriage bolts for the 4way to make sure it doesn't comeout.

thanks,

Ghoward

>>Yes that is the one I was referring to.<,

ahhh, by angled cp you mean then front to back?  I thought you meant the front panel angling to the sides.

The cp is slightly angled, 4" tall front, to 5" tall back, just hard to see in the photos.

thanks,
