My New Jukebox Build (No Name Yet)
« on: August 05, 2009, 02:44:44 am »
I have decided that I was going to attempt to build a touchscreen jukebox.  After browsing through these forums and checking out everyone's great builds I decided I was ready to take it on.  I think Mountain's jukebox was a huge inspiration and I hope he doesn't mind that I borrowed a couple of his ideas.

I started out designing the jukebox in Autocad.  I'm far from a draftsman but I took some classes in high school and college (~20 Years ago) and it helped me stumble my way through Autocad.  In the classes that I took we were drawing everything by hand...haha  I will post up the Autocad file if anyone is interested.  There are also some free DWG viewers out there that will allow you to view it if you do not have Autocad.  I'm not sure if I can post links so if you want I can send a link via PM.

Hardware Specs:
Intel Atom Board
2Gb RAM
500GB Hard Drive
17" ELO Touchscreen
Logitech Z-2300 Speakers

Software Specs:
Tiny XP
E-Touch Jukebox

I keep forgetting to take pictures as I go but I when I remember I will take them and update the thread.

Need to grab some black screws though.

Wow great start on this thing.  That cylindrical shape couldn't have been easy to make.  It is also unlike anything I've seen before which is nice.  Where are the speakers going to be located?  Have you decided on a finish?  I think laminate will look really nice.

Thanks for the comments. I have followed your Mountain clone as well as a bit of your Bella arcade, you do excellent work sir!

I did have a bit of a hard time getting the hardboard to wrap around the cylinder.  It really didn't want to stay.  I used some straps while I glued and stapled it all the way around.  I'm not exactly happy with where it meets the back panel but I will have to make it work....

For the finish, I have a sheet of Wilsonart black laminate that I will be wrapping around it. and I will be using black plexi on the top around the touchscreen.  It is going to be real tricky getting the plexi cut becuase of the oval shape of the top.

The bass speaker will be at the bottom of the cylinder and will have a cutout with a grill on the back side.  Originally, and you can see it in the autocad drawing, I was going to have the whole bottom cutout and have the sheetmetal with holes (or whatever they call that stuff) down there  but I didn't think that was going to look too good and the logistics of getting that to workout was going to be tricky, at least for my skillset.

The upper speakers will be mounted 2/3rds of the way up the cylinder.  I need to make some reinforcements before I cut the holes for them so that the hardboard will not split.  These will then have a grill covered with black speaker cloth flush against the back of the laminate.

This looks great newman! You just had to go and show me up didn't you. I'm getting ready to assemble my juke (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=95003.0) this weekend, I thought it was looking pretty sleek then you go and make a circle!

Good luck on getting the finish right, I'm sure it'll turn out great. For your front end have you looked at xlobby at all? It's a pretty versatile free program and Orion offers a fantastic looking skin for it in this thread here http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=93382.0. It's what I and many other members here are using in our Jukes. Check it out if you like

Thanks Hewskie!

I actually saw your build thread this morning and was thinking how close our hardware was as well as the overall cabinet.  At first I was going to design it similar to what you are building but I wanted it to take the smallest footprint I could as I don't have much room.  I may be regretting the cylinder soon because trimming the laminate and cutting the top plexi is going to be pretty tough.

I think I may have looked for xlobby back when I first got interested in building a jukebox because I think that is the frontend that Mountain is using I think.  The only thing I was able to find is that it looks like it went commercial?  If you have a link for the frontend I will check it out along with the Orion's skin, it looks pretty sweet.

Thanks, actually if you just download the file that Orion has in that thread it comes with the latest free version of xlobby in the .zip file. I found it myself with google but it took a while.

Good luck with the curves, I wouldn't regret them at all, they look pretty stylin'

Yes I have included all the software as well as instructions. Everything you need is there.

Very nice project! Love the curves.

You know, what would look +really+ great on a project like this? Wrap the whole thing in black plex, including the top.

If there was way to integrate the touchscreen in a bigger glass pane that spanned the entire top, that'd be awesome. It'd look kind of like the obelisk from 2001.

till, you turn it on anyway  :)

Either way, very nice. Curves are tough.

Sorry, I had meant to mention that I really like the design you have taken with this. It looks like a challenging build. Great job with it so far!
