Help for a software idiot?
« on: July 10, 2003, 07:27:11 pm »
Hi all, I have just downloaded MameWAH ( yes I know this is the wrong part of the forum ).
I have the shortcut on my desktop and can open it fine. My problem is I have no idea of how to make it go. I know I need to download a version of MAME to use with it and I'm guessing one of the DOS versions is best but where do I download it to, where do I put zipped ROM files. How do I make it go? I don't know anything about DOS or anything so is there a step by step guide for morons trying to use MameWAH or can anyone help. The read me text on MameWAH assumes that you actually know what you are doing. Help please.

Thankyou  :-[

Sorry, the help desk is only open for non-idots except on Tuesdays.

The best version is either the standard (nonDOS) mame or run a google search for fastmame. The roms go into the \roms\ subdirectory of your mame directory. As for the mame, you can put that anywhere as long as you remember where you put it.

To make it go (after mame and roms are installed), press "6" (the p2 start button) and that will bring up the menu. I'm sure you can figure it out from there.

Also, good choice with the Mamewah. I passed over it on my last project because the controls were not reconfigurable (had to use advancemenu, icky!). But now they are, so my current project is getting Mamewah.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

Well that's excellent but I still haven't got a clue what to do.
OK I've got the MameWAH icon on my desktop.
Then I download what version of MAME and save it where?
Then I download ROMS and do what with them?
I'm pretty stuck has anyone got a link to step by step instructions?.
Appreciated ( sorry to be such a twit, I feel really stoopid if that helps )

You can install mame anywhere you want, just make sure you point to it in the mamewah.cfg file.  Here's the first part of the MAMEWAH config file on my upright cab:

;MAME OPTIONS
MAME Title = MAME
MAME Executable = e:\mame\mame.exe
Snapshot Path = e:\mame\snap
Extra Options #1 = -nomouse -lightgun
Extra Options #2 =
Use Merged Romsets = False
Show DOS Box = False
Auto Show DOS Box = False

Roms typically go in the x:/mame/roms directory and you leave them zipped.
