OH NO! new monitor didn't work.
« on: July 27, 2009, 09:41:18 am »
Hi there.

i just spent the weekend stripping a broken wells gardener monitor out of my cab to swap for a wharfdale 19' tv. i wonder if anyone can help work out what i did wrong here.

  • .. i removed the old monitor (easy)
  • took the new 19" tv with scart and removed the back
  • then removed the rest of the plastic (leaving it on it's face)
  • had to fashion a sort or holder for the tv's board (see photo 1)
  • didn't discarge the monitor, i was just careful
  • made a custom faceplate board and mounted a shelf on it for the tv's board
  • bolted the tv and board onto the faceplate and put it in the cab

then i turned it on and didn't get a good result. (see the second picture)
 :-[

photo 1:
while stripping the tv of it's shell i had to support the board. anyone have any tips for this?

photo 2:
looks good right!? :)
before i broke it, the tv showed the usual 'snow' with no signal, and the menu would appear if i pressed the button. now all i get is this kind of more horizontal-slighly bigger and a bit blue snow/fuzz. and no menu comes up.

any ideas how to fix it? the tv was only £10 so it's no real problem other than the disappointment. any advise you have would be greatly appreciated before i go and do it all again.

thanks!

all the wires are exactly as they were in the TV - only one wire/plug came out the board during my moving it. it was that white one at the top right of the board that connects to the board on the back of the tube. it came out of the main board and was keyed so i just plugged it back in and it clicked in OK. seems in fine.

hmm ?

so it's ok to have it laying flat on it's screen for a couple days? and safe enough to just be careful and move the board a little when stripping it down? i was pretty scared the thick red plug would come out the board and i'd get ZAPPED with electro tube super rays.  :o

Sorry to hear you're having trouble with the picture, all I can think of is the jamma-> scart cable. Try powering it up with the board off or with the scart plug out, presuming you haven't already, and see what happens.

As for electro tube super rays, the anode (big red wire) is clipped in there tight so you shouldn't have any trouble as long as you don't go pulling on it ;) If it were to fall out while on that'd be REALLY bad so they're usually very secure!

well, i tried a ps2 that works when it's in the living room .. same thing. perhaps i will reseat some of the cables there - not the ones near the anode of course - it's good to know i was fairly safe while i was doing that all Nipedley   :P

thanks for your ideas / feedback on this people.

So it's definitely not an input problem? The only other thing that comes to mind is during the decasing/mounting process some of the adjustment knobs could have been mis-adjusted. Are there any on the chassis? It's hard to tell via the picture... I'd go for horizontal sync adjustment if it's there. Could of course be something completely different but that's all that I can think of right now :-\

yeah it can't be an input problem. i've made sure all wires are in where they are supposed to be firmly. no change.

i had look about it for some adjustment knobs, the only things i could see were some pot kinda things that are on the board end of a wire that comes form teh board at the back of the tube.. it's next to where the the red anode cable plugs into the board too.. and some big kind of rectangular leafs that stick out the back of the tube - they pretty solid - and i don't know what they do.

would it be safe enough to unscrew these to see if it helps?

it's SO WEIRD ! ?

when i turn it on i get nothing but a horizintal strip of fuzz, it then begins to roll from top to bottom, then switches to mad fuzz. changing it from tv to AV or pressing the meu button just makes the screen kind of flicker.

 :dunno :lol

how do you know this tv worked in the first place
anyway those two adjustments are the screen volts and focus so won't make a difference to the lack of sync that you are experiencing-if you turn the screen volts too high you will probably trip the monitor btw
try to see if you get a pic through the aerial connection

Well, I know it didn't do THAT when I turned it on when I bought it. I didn't test it while I was ripping it apart tho. Ok hmm, I will try the arial but it seems to be something other than signal. Maybe it doesn't like being mounted/sitting at an angle in there.

Almost about time to forget this one and find a new telly!?

not time to give up,i have been working on monitors and arcade machines for 25 years-that monitor is almost working

if you set to tv and put a piece of wire in the aerial centre pin you should get a full screen of fuss or part picture-if so then this monitor is working-then its a case of seeing what is broken/connected wrong

I shouldn't think that being mounted would hurt it, you can put them any which way you want and it should be fine. Worst you would get is some discolouration of the picture..

My 1st step would be to 'unplug' any scart or any other device you added and try as grant said the aerial in there. My reason for saying this is when I made my first jamma -> scart adapter I got a similar picture as you (lack of sync), including on regular channels as it was still interfering. However it went back to normal picture when I unplugged the adapter, as I had wired up my adapter wrong.
