Cap kit not available: which caps to choose?

Hi there,

I have finally cleared enough space in the garage for another go at fixing my old cabinet up for MAME. I intend to use an old 21" Philips TV w. SCART (plus ArcadeVGA). The TV is a 21GR2550/02B, by the way...

The image shows a few black lines near the top that I am sure a cap kit will fix, but I can't find anyone selling a cap kit for this monitor. So I guess I will have to buy the capacitors separately.

Are there any rules of thumb for which caps are most important to replace? There are an awful lot of them on the chassis board! I am kinda hoping I can start with the most 'important' ones and check the improvement as I go.

The ones near the flyback are meant to fail quickly due to the heat and stress of that area. If it were me I'd just replace them all in one go. It's got to be quicker than to keep wiring it back up to check every time you do one anyway Plus for the peace of mind!

Hmm... You may be right. I can count 35-40 caps on the chassis    Are the really big ones as likely to fail as the small ones?

Anyway, I guess (since it is a TV and not 'just' an arcade monitor) that I will leave the ones near the TV tuner section until last.

I attached a picture of my screen (black lines at the top) as well as my chassis, if anyone wants to chip in with advice

I can't say which ones would cause the lines but I've seen a few and experienced once myself a monitor with a fudged top of the screen which replacing capacitors fixed Depending on how your signal is getting in its possible you'd get away with leaving the ones around the tv tuner but for completeness I'd do it anyway. A capacitor is pence and only a minute of your time
